I've searched for this gun off and on for the last few years and haven't been able to find the 7 shot without a lock.

Does anyone know if they made these or how I could look this up myself?

Thanks -

So, they're out there ;)

I'd look for a "686+" or "686 Plus" if I was looking for the 7 shooter in particular. That said, I have other 6 shot L frames, and I don't really feel like I am giving up much, if anything, with them.

maustypsu,

As 2hawk has so amply demonstrated (very nice 2hawk), no lock 7 shot 686's are out there. In fact I have 2 of them, a full-lugged 4" bbl. 686+ and a 686+ Mountain gun.

In fact, I have been toying with the idea of selling the full-lug gun (since I'm new and this is my first post, can I say that?).

I have a 686+ no-lock in a 4" Mountain Gun, but those are VERY hard to find as few were made before they started putting the lock on. Mine came straight from the factory to my door as a replacement for a 586 that had a warranty issue they could not fix. Last revolver I would sell.

I also was looking for a no lock S&W revolver (Model 649). I found a couple on Gun Broker but the dealer was asking too much. I don't mind too much about the lock but just wanted to see what was out there in a no lock model with a reasonable price.

I currently have 4, 7 shot 686's without the lock. A 686 mountain gun, a 7 incher and 2 five inchers one full lug and one standard Bbl.

As others have stated they do exist but I think most people that have them do not get rid of them. I have a 2.5" and a 4" 686-4+.

You will find them in 686-4 and 686-5 models.

I have a 2 1/2 inch one as well. I never shoot it, but I don't want to get rid of it either. At least, not yet.

They are out there and personally I think the hardest ones to find are the 686-5 7shot 3in. Also you could do a search for 686 CS-1 also hard to find.

rrobertson,

Dang, I had a CS-1 at one time but let a friend of mine talk me out of it. Later on, I asked about buying it back, but found out he had traded it off for a Glock 19...Yes, we are still friends (once I started speaking to him again).

Sure. As long as you tell us you're planning to get something even COOLER! :D Compared to the mountain gun, I can see where your 686+ 4" full lug would become trading material. Remember, if you sell it, it'll be awfully hard to Eeeeever find another one at a decent price...

Here's my 4" 686-4+. Note that 'Plus' seven-shooters also come with a round butt - like this one:

Yea I wouldnt talk to him again. First off for trading it and second for a BLOCK no less. A hard to come by great piece of craftsmanship for a plastic *** you can find on any street corner for a nickle. Yes I hate glocks and most plastic/polymer ***'s but I do like the XDM's, keep in mind I only own 1 a 4.5in .45 and never use it for carry just a back up to a back up to a back up HD firearm.

You will find them in 686-4 and 686-5 models.

So if I want a 686 no dash then I would have to get the 6 shot??? And then get the 7 in a dash -4 or -5 without a lock???

That's good info to help me narrow my search. I kind of thought my issues with find one was just like you said, that those who have them aren't selling them.

Search for "Smith 686-4" on GB...they pop up all the time.

I have a 4" 686-4+ that is my favorite !

Yep. 686 no dash up until current models are made in 6 shot. The 686+ (7 shot) started in the -4. The -4 and -5 do not have a lock.
