I was contemplating one of these monsters recently and noticed something strange..
The 12" model

Product: Model 460XVR
Has a MSRP of 1619

While the 14" model (with muzzlebrake and bipod)

Product: Model 460XVR
Has a MSRP of 1419

So how would the longer barrel plus a bipod make it $200 cheaper? Usually barrel length doesnt play that much into price..

Granted I've also heard the 14" model is a very elusive beast to see out in the wild. I've read on some posts that very few were actually made. I dont think I've ever seen one actually for sale either....

Nice "beast", but i will stick with my 5 inches! Better have a rifle vs that kind of barrel lenght...

Maybe "new" old stock compared to new stock? Maybe demand? Maybe the flutes are hand cut in the 12'' cylinder as compared to the unfluted cylinder on the 14''? Maybe the sling swivels are precious metal on the 12''. I know after a long day in the woods and a long walk back to the truck, having a sling on a X-Frame is priceless............

Those 12" & 14" .460's look wild !
Unreal muzzlebrake on the 14".
I believe i'll stick with my 460XVR in the 8 3/8", at least can hold it up without using a bipod --------- :D

Does anyone own the 14"?
I like to see some pictures

I spoke to S&W yesterday, he said the 14" is still available... but there was nothing on the production schedule for them to be made. He said it would be a long wait if I ordered one... But I've never seen one for sale... so I might be forced to go that route... If anyone comes across a 14" for sale let me know

Hi everyone, (1st post!),

Spoke to SW a couple of weeks back re this same question....Why $200 more for a shorter gun with less features? They said it comes down to the fluting of the cylinder pure and simple (apparently buck460xvr got it right). Trigger is the same.

I had really wanted one of these and it kind of concerns me that they have no production runs scheduled. It's still on the website so I'd better get off my arse.

The 12" is so loud...I can't even imagine the noise the 14 w/break must make.

I think the big potato break looks cool, but I bet it blows a lot of **** into your face after it starts to carbon up..no thanks. The 12" is a lot of fun and very accrurate. Plenty long too..lol

Thanks Guys I found the answer I was looking for on the 12 inch and the 14inch Im still going to buy one online soon

I received my new .460SW last Thursday and was shooting at my range on Friday 08/31/2012 - with the current scope & holo-sight set-up. Hornady FTX 200Gr produced 1-1/2" group @ 100yds through scope and 1/2" group @ 50yds through holo-sight. (I hope to improve considerably over the coming weeks with some trigger-time). But the gun is sweet, and the action is like "butta" (albeit, more like engaging a "Bushhog", than pulling a hammer back!) lol

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen!!!
I want one bad!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
Buck Rogers in Deep Space.
Carrying the gun in the woods doesn't look so bad, but it's gonna be toough to get someone to carry the table and bench.. I would love to pop off a cylinder full of .460

I own one exactly like this. This is not mine in the picture though but it is gorgeous and since it was made for Ellet Brothers and only 300 were produced I paid for it and notice that my cylinder is fluted and the gun is a gorgeous 2-tone. I got a steal though and it was through this board that I was put into contact with the store that sold it to me in Florida. I have owned it a couple years and can shoot 1/2 inch at 50 yards with open sights but I am now about to put a Leupold 2.5-8X32 on it with Warne mounts. I am not sure if anyone knows what mounts I should get and if I should put on 3 instead of 2. If anyone wants to help me out in the scope ring department I would greatly appreciate it. If this post goes unnoticed I will just make another thread. This is such an amazing gun. Something about a revolver-esq firearm that delivers something neither a rifle or normal revolver can.

Thanks a ton!!!!!

Hi friends,

Just to mess this whole thing up a little bit, there is ANOTHER 460XVR option out there... Back in 2007 I bought a Lew Horton Performance Center 460 "Hunter" (product code 170282) that has a 14" barrel, unfluted cylinder, and no muzzle break. The barrel is fluted, and blackened in the grooves.

MSRP at the time was $1729.95 and I bought it for $1,284 delivered. I just went to the Lew Horton website, and the item page still loaded.

Check it out:

Best wishes,

nice, mine had a similar MSRP and I certainly didn't pay that much although at the time I had the cash, didn't have the brand new house or the wife and I wasn't in the process of going back to school yet again and wanted this gun so badly I might have. LOL.
