snub nose .44 specials

Nice idea.

But the reality is the 296 didn't sell well.

The 396 mountain lite didn't sell well either.

The 396 night guard lasted for a while.

The 696 didn't really go over all that well when first introduced.

Of course NOW the 696s are hot hear on the forum.

But major companies move on in product offerings.

Adapt to trends or die.

Bring back an all steel, fixed sight, 2 1/2", 5 shot L frame. Same barrel/forcing cone configuration as the new M 69 and you'll have a winner. Maybe even throw in a factory bobbed DAO hammer and make it a PC gun. Sans NO PORTING.

Repeat: FIXED SIGHT for a carry gun.

I like the 624 snubs over the 696 though I prefer the scandium frames and if it has a titanium cylinder all the better. Thankfully I have both the 296 and 396 so I'm set but if they made another one like them I'd probably get that too.

Charter Bulldog type

Would love to see S&W make something along the lines of a Charter Bulldog......but with the S&W quality. Be a bit bigger than a J frame, or maybe it could be based on the Jframe. I have a Scandium .357 5 shot, recoil is brutal with full patch .357 loads, but still shootable. Think a .44 Spl would be a bit more manageable.

I understand the advantages of an L over an N, but, what is the advantage of a Special over a Magnum??

Maybe we need a 3 shot "J"? I would buy that!!

What would the # be for a 3 shot 44 Mag "J"? :)

If They Made These..........

I wouldn't have to.

They shoot great with 44 Special. If you think you might have to stick one in a bear's ear,

put magnum's in it.

The last used 696 I saw (in pretty crummy condition) was priced at $950. I want one, but that's just ridiculous. The next best option was the Rossi 720, which cost me all of $225.00 a few years ago. It's not a Smith but the trigger is surprisingly good, it carries well and it shoots as well as I can hold. I had a 2.5" Taurus 44 Spl (M-445?) several years ago, and the build quality of this Rossi puts it to shame.

I'd love to see another run of smallish 44 Specials, but until it happens, this gun is the best alternative I've found.

My dad bought a 3" 624 around 1985. This is what got me into the hand gun sport to start. Its a sweet gun, Heavy as can be. Built on a 29 frame. I remember him loading some hot ones and asked me to shoot it. I fired 3 rounds and said you shoot the last two. It hurt! We fired a lot of lead through it. Two summers of bowling pin shooting. He still has it.

Thanks for the memory.

Or something like this.

2.5" .44 Spl

STCM,
Yes, exactly like that. If Taurus can do it so can S&W. They now have the base gun with the forcing cone issue corrected in the M 69. Would just be a matter of barrel ejector rod change with a fixed sight. I had the 3" barrel Taurus fixed sight. Unfotunately it was square butt with target stocks that didn't work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I've heard that a Charter Arms Bulldog in 45 ACP will be available this Summer. I hope it's true. S&W missed the boat on this one.

A S&W model 21 with a 2.5" or 3" barrel would Make My Day. If S&W is listening. No internal lock, keep the fixed sights and a high luster blue finish. I'll buy more than one.

Yeah, can't help but luv a snubby 44spl.. I had one of my CA 3"Bulldogs cut to 2.5 inches and Duracoated so I wouldn't obsess about it's general ware and appearence. It's been a good trooper and worn well so far. I shoot it every three weeks or so. Good double action trigger and the cost to own can't be beat.
