Recently I made a purchase of a 'new' Model 64-8 six-gun. I notice there appeared to be some feature changes between the current 64-8 and 10-14 with the Models 10-5 and 10-6 shooters that I own. I haven't bought new in a long time and was hoping that someone could bring me up to speed with the feature changes between the two different era K-frame .38 Revolvers from S&W. Many thanks!

The main visible differences between a '70s era K frame .38 and a recent one would be the integral frame lug for the cylinder stop, the MIM hammer and trigger/frame-mounted firing pin and the internal lock. The later gun will have different stampings and other details also.

Very few people know Smiths as well as murphydog and I salute him! To me the layman and multiple 10/64/66 user, however, and purely subjectively, these new model K-frames do not seem to be true K-frames. Nothing wrong with them, and I would prefer to have one in my hand rather than a semi-auto if the SHTF, but they do not feel "right." Almost like a photo slightly out of focus or an FM station not properly tuned in. IMHO, and I'm usually not humble. In this, I am. Respectfully,

Agree with kaaskop49 - for those used to the classic K frame proportions, the rear frame is larger due to the lock (and the upper frame curve near the hammer looks funny to me); it may also shift the center of gravity back, affecting handling.

Mod 64 Front Sight

Hmmm! I guess that I picked up one that is an early 64-8. The one that I have has the integral Stainless blade. Would be nice to have a replaceable front sight.

Thanks for the info, Will have to look for that feature the next time.

Hey Dabney!:)
You made a great purchase, the 64-8 is an excellent revolver.

I love mine, it's an Ohio DOC trade in. Great action and shoots like it thinks it's a match revolver. I shot this target in DA at 25 yards just casually plinking. I'm no master pistol shooter but this gun makes me look good:)

The 64-8's have a round forcing cone like an L-frame, no flat spot on the bottom. I think the two piece barrel improves accuracy a bit but not enough for most people to notice.

I was going to buy another 64-8 , a brand new one, but mine is tight, in time and shoots well so I don't need it. I am looking at a 64-6 though and would love a no dash taper barrel 64.

I also have a 64-7, 64-5 NY-1 and a 64-3.

My "tuned up" 64-7 shoots better than I can hold, after I shot this target at 10 yards in DA I fired 6 in SA at 50 yards and kept them all in the circle.
It usually wears black Hogues but the Zombie grips come out when I'm feeling kinda goofy

I had two 10-14's but I sold them. I do kinda miss one of them, but I don't think I'd buy another 10-14, I'd get a 4" 10-10 RB or a 10-11 instead. A 10-11 is the same gun , with no lock.

Sounds like your shooting rates a perfect "10." My love for the 80's versions of the 64 stems from the 2 casino security guns I picked up 4 years ago. After cleaning out the hardened gunk, the sweetest double actions you could want! Good shooting!

Thank you:)

I also love my 1978 production 64-3, it's bone stock and the DA pull is heavy but even throughout the stroke, excellent for a "plain jane" mass produced service revolver that's never been tuned up.

I have a 581 that's no doubt had a "duty tune" done and you can feel the difference. Not so much lighter but very smooth DA pull.

Stantheman, excellent pictures of your Model 64-8! I love your choice of firearms in 4-inch fixed sight six-guns in .38/.357 calibers. I haven't bought a 'new' S&W .38 six-gun in many years. Several like-new models, but not new. Right out I could see some manufacturing differences beteen my Model 10-6 and this new 64-8 besides the stainless steel/blue steel issues. I have been satisfied by the responces to my manufacturing question and wish to respectfully thank 'all' who responded. Thanks again Stantheman!
