Question What are your favorite grips for J-frames?

I prefer wood. But, I can't decide which set to put on my M&P 340

So, what is yours wearing? I don't think the "stock" S&W rubbers are that great, especially for pocket carry. I did try a set of Eagle boot grips that were supposed to be for a J-frame round butt and, they didn't fit any of my Js. So, I put the goodyers back in service for now.

So, what are your 340/PDs wearing?

Thanks guys.

These beauties came from the factory on my Model 60 ND .38

I may try them on my new Model 360J to see how they feel and how they look.

I wonder if Atamont makes exactly the same grips? If so I'd save these.

I like Uncle Mike's. Both the boot grip and the combat style for my J-frames. Not much to look at, but they feel great and fit my hand real well. S&W Combat Stocks look great on everything.

I'm not sure. They look like they would be great on a belt gun.

If I don't put wood on it, I think I'm gonna find a set of Uncle Mike's boot grips.

Nice 638.

This thread triggered a question ........ based on something I saw posted awhile back.........

Not to hi-jack..... but maybe add to the thread.

Are there 2 sizes (regular and "'oversized") J-frame square butt target grips?

In the thread I'm remembering ...... someone referred to their grips as........"Oversized target grips....."

Weatherby.... What;you don't own a J-frame ?.......you got "the wood thing" bad!

My 60-10 3" wears modified/ (shortened slightly) Spegel extended Boot grips

My favorite changes just about every week or on what I'm doing!

Generally Badger boot grips, but for when concealment is primary (or I'm feeling old school. ) Magnas with grip adapter. The Pachmayer compac's are my favorite if belt carrying or if I'm wearing pants with bigger pockets.

HOGUE TAMER's

small enough for nemesis pocket carry
large enough that you can actually grip the weapon

soft rubber to absorb recoil...hard plastic end to allow sliding out of pocket with ease.

I like Uncle Mike's boot grip's too. I have used wood but the rubber feels better in my hand.

I love the look of wood, but the synthetic boot grips are my favorite for actual shooting.

For J frame pocket guns, i stick with old style wood magnas. They may not be the most comfortable to shoot with, but they sure do cut down on weight, size and they slide in and out of the pocket nicely. Its not a range gun, if you ever have to use the gun to defend yourself, your adrenaline will be kicking and you wont be able to tell what grips you have on there anyway. My 342.

I've tried about a dozen grips, and these are easily my favorite. Very shootable. The plastic butt cap helps for belt carry too. This target was 10 rounds offhand at 7 yards, 135+P Gold Dots.

These are "aged ivory" (bonded) from Altamont, with a BK grip adapter.

Currently waiting for replacements from Altamont. I have a thread with a lot of details about this combo.

Hogue G-10 laminate on my pocket gun 642-2.

Original service stocks with a Tyler T grip on the 36 and Taiwan slim finger grooves on the 34.

Altamont Diamondwood also show on the old M36

QUESTION: which of the above grips will allow the use of speedloaders? I pocket carry a 642 everyday along with a few speedloaders for reloads. I'm really curious if the Hogue Tamers work with speedloaders? But also the wood grips?

Thanks!

Hogue Tamers work with speedloaders.

The current factory boot grips do not. Uncle Mike's boot grips do work with speedloaders.

Unfortunately I never tried a speedloader for the short time I tried magnas on my J.

HKS speed loaders work with the Badger boot grips as well as with the Magnas. (the Magnas are a little snug though.)

The Pachmayer compac's work after I trimmed some of the martial away.

Those combats look great on the 640. That would be my choice for a steel J-frame.

For lightweight carry I am liking the alloy grips from EFF. They are small, light, weatherproof, and slide out of a pocket or holster easily. Unlike wooden checkering, the checkering on the EFF grip will never lose its bite. Also, the similar materials of the grip and frame seem to transfer recoil more evenly than comparably-sized (minimal) wood grips. And...they look cool.

My 649 has standard Magnas plus a T-grip. I like T-grips so a lot of my guns wear them.

I took the factory rubber boot grips off my 642 and put on Eagle wood boot grips because I like the way they look and they work just as well for me as the rubber ones.

My newly acquired 638 came with "Goodyear" boot grips, not on it, okay, I guess that's the same rubber as referred to above, and combat boot grips on it made of the same Goodyear material. I didn't examine them to see who made them; I guess I should. Anyway, I really like those so I kept them on there; it's a nice aid at the range to keep my pinky on the grips but it makes the gun harder to conceal in my pocket so I don't, I IWB carry it.

I might get pretty, wood combat boot grips for the 638.....just because.....

The grips in my photos all work with HKS speedloaders and also Bianchi speed strips. The stock magnas interfere a tiny bit, but not enough to stop the loading process.

Here's what the Uncle Mike combat style grips look like. Shown on a 4" round butt M63-3. They were factory at that time (1997). Great grips, too, but not as concealable as UM's boot grip. Speed loaders would not be a problem.

I have smooth banana targets on my 36. they look great, and are comfortable. Bob

I just put these on my 3" 36 but have not shot it yet with them on. The price was right, NOS Jay Scott.

S&W combats,

Then S&W Bananas

Then Tyler T with Magnas

Then Uncle Mike's

For looks I love my Andean Alder wood grips from Esmeralda.

Only have one J-frame, my EDC for sixteen years. Almost from day one it's worn Pachmayr Compacs. Love the hold they give me and the way they ease the effect of recoil on old, arthritic hands.

Not pretty, but they damn sure fit my needs and my paws.

I agree about the comfort of the boot grips from Uncle Mike's, and even more important, with a standard grip and the pad of my middle finger touching the grip screw hole, the gun is perfectly aligned to hit where it points.

Can't beat that, and no, not all two piece grips have the grip screw hole so situated. I find it a real helpful index.

Many otherwise-nice wood grips simply aren't set up that same way.

I guess I like Eagle Secret Service grips on my Airweights.

I agree!!!

For wood grips, I choose factory combats. They fill my hand and allow me to have all my fingers on the grip. My choice for rubber grips are Pachmayr Compacs. The fully covered backstrap is a huge help when shooting full-power .357s out of my 640. The only downside is that my HKS speedloaders will not work, so I carry Bianchi speed-strips instead.

Thanks guys. There is I lot if good information in this thread. I think I'm gonna order a set of Uncle Mike's Boot Grips and a set of Magnas and try them both. I have a set of wood boot grips on it now, I robbed them from my 640-1. that I haven't been carrying much lately. I think they are Altamont Diamondwood. But, I can feel the difference in weight.

Again, thanks for the insight and pics.

That 632 is sweet! I still haven't given 327 Federal Magnum a try.

I use Hogue Bantams on the 60 no dash and the stock UM's on the 642. Found that the Pachmayr's were too sticky in the pocket. Would like to get some rosewood lady Smith's for the 60 though.

The 327 is Unreal. Better ballistics than a 357 and very little felt recoil.

I have a Ruger Snub 327 Fed Mag as well. Just love the caliber.

I also think the Pro Series grips are a good fit for steel J-frames.

As far as J Frame grips go, weight is the most important factor to me. Looks are important as well, but I am not going to put 5 oz grips on my 12oz to 15oz J Frame. Below are the lightest grips I know of:

-Vintage J Frame S&W factory Magnas = 0.9 oz
-Eagle Secret Service Grips = 1.0 oz

I have lots of J Frame grips and most typically weigh between 1.3 ozs to 2.3 ozs. Anything heavier makes no sense at all. Even anything over 2 ozs makes little sense in my opinion. It just defeats the purpose of a lightweight carry gun.

My absolute lightest set up is a 342PD with eagle secret service grips. Weighs in at 13.1 ozs loaded.

Here are some of my other favorites. You can see my various set-ups. Ignore the non-J Frames

Nice 638.
Try a pair of VZ's! I've got Predator Green on my Model 60 and a set of Black Cherry on my M-36. I find them a little classier than the rubber Boot grips. My VZ's are the Tactical (checkered) ones, as opposed to the smooth ones.

I'm also a fan of stock round grips with a Tyler "T" adapter.

I like these cheap Sile grips, I got 4 sets for about $25 from CDNN a few years back. I like the "banana" style factory stocks but they are too nice for a carry gun. Joe
