Very pleased with a no dash 686 I just purchased. It isn't marked with the M but it fired hot loads just fine so I don't think I'll be sending it back. I'm unsure about the numeration/serial number though. Anyone familiar with the markings? I must clean my new baby, and I'm digging the ribbed metal backstrap.

Bottom line ~ take off the grips and look at what is stamped on the bottom of the grip frame. Legally that is your gun's serial number. Everything else goes back to manufacturing processes to track respective parts etc. Regardless of what you find anywhere else, what is stamped on the bottom of the grip is what you record/report as the serial number.

Thanks Froggie.

RaginRog,
No need to remove the grips. The serial # is AFP2279 and dates your revolver to 1984.
686 (no dash) started production 1980.
686-1 was introduced 1986.

Do not hold me to the following but the recall for the 586's and 686's was the mid 1980's and those that were "fixed" received a M stamped on the frame opposite the yoke either above or below the serial number as best I remember. Supposedly, back in the day, Federal brand .357 magnums had soft primers and upon firing they would deform rearwards binding up against the firing pin bushing area. Rumor has it that many S&W 586 and 686 no dash revolvers without modifications have fired plenty of .357 magnum loads without problems. One of the guys I shoot with has had no problems with his 586 no dash shooting .357 magnum loads.

After the rumors, gossip, and innuendo .... everything else is just a lie.

That baby could use a good cleaning and buff. You can use Flitz or Mother mag wheel polish. It will make a world of a difference.

Thanks James,
I cleaned the carbon off of her shortly after the pics were taken and decided to call SW this morning regarding the recall fix. Shipped it back this afternoon, and will certainly break out the Mother's polish when it gets back.
