best recoil reducing grip without being too big?

I simply don't care for shooting my 629 MG 4" with 240gr. loads. not intolerable but the open back strap of the stock rubber grips gives me a little sting after two cylinders, they are very Hogue like and do not fill the gap behind the trigger guard much either.

I've read enough reviews of the pachmayr gripper decelerator and its poor fit for the round butt N frame.... so my question to the brain trust is (other than shooting light loads) which grip do you recommend for perceived recoil reduction with the N frame RB .44 mag? I want a hand fulling grip without the grip being T-rex size like the 500 mag grip looks.

Thanks.

I don't have any problem with the Pacmayr rubber grips for recoil control. They aren't pretty but they do soften recoil in a synthetic grip nicely, without excess bulk.

A friend gave me Pachmayr Presentations for my new square butt 629 and it made a big difference compared to the wood grips it came with. They are fairly large though.

I have Pachmayr Decelerators on my 627 and I've seen those poor reviews but I like the grips and have no complaints after thousands of rounds. I am planning on buying more for some of my other guns.

I'll second Pizza Bob's impact absorbing Grips. By FAR the best grip I have used on the hotter shooting S&W's

Try to find someone that has them on their gun & go feel them for yourself. To me they are not nearly as large feeling as they look like would be.

Not only do they reduce felt recoil but for me they improve my 20 & 25 yard groups by quite a bit.

it doesn't say they fit the N frame round butt. I don't want to have to deal with returns on ill-fitted grips. the regular pachmayr grippers aren't made for the RB N frame... wish I knew some folks near by that I could see what they have, but they all shoot ruger s/a 44s.

Nothing ill-fitting about them...

In my opinion, the best "smaller grips" for taming recoil are Pachmayr Compac grips. Pachmayr #: 03297

I don't want a "smaller grip", I just prefer not to have a high top sneaker sized grip. the grippers (that cover the back strap) are what I like but not made for the RB N frame. the decelerators are, however there are too many sloppy loose fit reviews to chance that I get the 50% out there that are properly fitted. every place I've looked that sells the decelerators has several reviews complaining of loose fit and over sized retaining screws.

I was hoping for something the same size and function without having to go bigger.

Well I sure won't claim they're 'the best', but I just strapped on the Pachmayr "Diamond Pro" grip for my 629 and I am one happy camper. It wasn't recoil at all that was the issue...it was having to use superman strength to hold the gun due to tiny, thin slippery grips. My hands are average size ('average' statistically...based on an online measurement survey of about 1,500 guitar players--who don't have statistically large hands btw).

Now when I first put them on at home I thought immediately they were going to shred my hands--they're grippy. But, well over a 100 rounds later (at one sitting) and my hands were happy, happy. PLUS, they are small enough that my weak can actually do something useful, too.

Yes, they are purely functional. No curb appeal here. Sent the VZ grips back for a refund and can buy 2 of these Pachmayrs for what I get refunded. Worth every penny in my book--recommend without any reservation. Bought mine at OpticsPlanet, something like $29-32 bucks shipped to the door.

I used SB Grippers on my RB 625JM. Worked great for me. I realize 45ACP is not a .44 mag. Bob

Have you considered having a pair of Herretts made to fit your hand?
Perhaps the Jordan trooper?
More $$ sure, but much better fit, to your hand and to your revolver.

I put the 500 grips on my Model 69 and I'm very pleased with the result. Fits well and makes a noticeable difference in felt recoil.

I have these on my 629 and personally don't have an issue shooting PMC through it.

I have the Pachmayr Decelerator grips on my 329PD, Model21-4 and soon on my 329NG. Best thing I have done for the weapons.

Biker gloves that have the gel inserted at the web of the thumb, and palm could help quite a bit, and they are already without finger tips. Buy good ones-you get what you pay for.
