I just picked up my 686 no dash today. Went from the shop to the range (I ran a bore snake through it beforehand). Shot a half a box of Federal, nice sweet gun. Serial AJF0XXX. Any Ideas of age? It looks dirty from firing it, Ill post pic after I clean it. I could be wrong but I thought it was a good deal at $650. Any thoughts?

AJF prefix would probably be sometime in 1985,

When you open the cylinder look for the letter "M" stamped near the the serial number and model stamp,
If it is there your gun has had the hammer nose mod,

If there is no "M" stamp you can send your 686 back to S&W under their factory recall to have the hammer nose bushing mod performed free of charge, Whilst there they will perform a free inspection and bring the gun up to spec if needed.

On the other hand if your gun runs flawless probably best to wait until it has some sort of issue (if it ever does) in the unforeseen future then send it in for the free mod and tune up.

NICE! I have one "with a dash", and it's a 4" but my favorite gun.
Nice score.

And, the Dallas was kinda like the Rush, only really old.

Heh-heh-heh...

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, MrFairlane500. CONGRATULATIONS, YOU DID VERY WELL. THAT REVOLVER SHOULD CLEAN UP NICELY. I LOVE THE NO-DASH 686s. I HAVE TWO. THEY ARE GREAT SHOOTERS…….

Call them first. They have a test and you may not need the modification. My four incher is a no dash from 1985.

You have a gun that will be enjoyed for years. Mine shoots well (-3) Never got the modification done on my no dash 586. The prices keep inching up on these guns. I like your pic backdrop! Bob

I have a used 586 no dash and it's a very nice firearm. The stock trigger is better than my 327 PC trigger. That's a shame. Not sure if the older guns are that much better or if the new guns are lacking...not complaining as I love my PC gun, but damn! Congrats on a great new-used gun!
