Well I have this 3 1/2 inch 27-2 just sitting around...

Is it possible to convert it to .45 ACP/LC, or even .44 Spl.?

I understand the cylinder is short so .45 LC might not work, but what about the other two?

Is there someone who does the work VERY PROFESSIONALLY?

Thanks!

Or.....just buy a revolver in the caliber you want and chop the barrel to the length you want. FAR easier work and much cheaper. I will likely take a 25-5 at some point and have one shortened to a 3-3.5".

It's been done before but I wouldn't do it to an original 3.5" M27, that is arguably the most desirable of the M27s. I'd sell or trade it to get what I want if I was you.

That said, these kinds of caliber conversions aren't uncommon and have been done for decades, the smaller bore N frames being converted to .45LC, .45ACP, .44Spl, .44Mag, etc.. The M28 Highway Patrolman was a popular base gun for these kinds of projects, they were common and inexpensive. There are still shops out there that will do it for you if you really want, although, since it's easier today to find big bore S&W revolvers in all configurations than ever before, it doesn't make much sense to have one custom built. Unless, of course, you're after something really particular.

As an example of what can be done, this is a pic of my Krebs Custom .45ACP M28 "CROWBAR", it was done around 1987.
