4" 44 Magnum picture show

Well, I only have this picture of my 1976 nickeled Model 29-2 with a pretty funky background but ...................here it is.

Most of you already know my favorite caliber and launching platform.
For those that don't its a standard 4" stainless steel 44 mag.
I like the mountain guns but only have the one MR that's been highly modified by Magnaport. For a woods bumming gun I really appreciate the 329PD's for their extreme light weight and when I cc a belt holstered gun it is a 329 wearing boot grips.

For every other use its a standard 4" 629 that I prefer. They are my favorite plinking guns. With my favorite load and good lighting, I was pretty handy on the long range rocks, that I love to shoot. The -1 in the photos has been back to Smith for two rebuilds and one refinish, its pretty much retired now. The no dash and transitional guns just hang out looking pretty. The current production -6 lives in the rage bag and gets used whenever I make it to the range. The one in factory rubber has been such an outstanding sixgun, shooting fullbore jacketed, cast and midrange cast all to basically the same point of impact and holding up to over 12K of use. I went and bought a spare and dressed it up with some Ahrends.

I'll put up some photos.

Does anyone else like a 4" magnum?
Feel free to share yours.

Chris

My favorite .44 Magnum and favorite handgun is this machine engraved 4" 29-10 to date even after getting a Competitor 6" 686 PC.

I just posted today on it and there's a thread here on that.

I agree with you that the 4" SW 29 is the best handgun ever made. Despite Callahan's like for the longer barrel.

My 4" has lesser recoil than anything longer and I won't dive for a 5" with heavy underlug. No way.

I like light area under the muzzle and no excess weight like the ribbed and ventilated Python. Too much metal makes me feel stupid behind a gun like that.

Of course the favorite is on the bottom while the barrels increase in length in the 29 (not Classic heavy metal underlugs from 4-6 inches.

I am biased to the SW 29 Carbon Steel 29-10 and share your love of stainless with the 8 and 3/8 inch 1985 629-1 picture with the 6 and 1/2" (I have two of these the other is a 50th Anniversary gold inlaid edition of 1956-2006 (it shows the darkest handle of Goncalo Alves here):

The SW Titanium PD 4" in the picture.

I had one and it blew up in my hand without injuring me. Felt something wrong before pulling the hammer back SA again. The gun felt funny and I looked at it. The barrel and part of the frame had fractured into just a cylinder with a frame blown open holding the inserted barrel.

I took it back to Brian Murphy in Tucson AZ at Murphy's Guns. He sent it back to SW and SW replaced it with an entire new PD.

I didn't want it and used the compensation for another gun. I never went Titanium Scandium again and never will.

Sorry to tell you the truth but that is one 4" .44 Magnum I can't bring myself to buy again.

I would rather use a real lightweight gun made in the times CNC and MIM were not around with Ti and Sc.

Like this old Colt New Police in .32 called a Cobra:

My feeling about lightweight is really lightweight with just enough lethal force; not big and lightweight with Magnum Force.

I've sold off all of my safe queens but one.

This is the one I shoot. It's not quite as nice as it appears in this pic (taken by the forum member from whom I purchased it). Both are 29-2's. I still have a 6 1/2" and an 8 3/8" 29-2,a 6 1/2" 629 and a very early 6 1/2 " 44 Magnum.

I have a 29-2 that I wanted to post a 'How To" about.

I have posted a number of threads here and was looking to see if I had posted something like this in this vein and cannot get my threads or posts to come up. All I get is a "Sorry....."

Anyone know a way to contact the "master" about this?

I think it would be some what interesting to some as I cut the barrel back a thread and shifted the cylinder lock in the frame .008 and it also includes pics of pieces I made for a Rockchucker to "slightly" bump cast FN Mihec 250 & Saeco Fn 240 up to .433.

Just can't seem to find my old threads.

Help

Maybe try asking in the "Forum Office" at the very bottom of the main page.

My only 4" 44; a 29-2 nickel.
I bought it to shoot 44 specials, but since then I lucked into a 624 Lew Horton Combat Special, so this one can go back to magnum duty.

I used to have a beautiful 4", 29-2 that I traded a Glock 19, and a couple hundred bucks for.
Unfortunately I had to sell it when I was out of work for so long a couple of years ago.

I replaced it with this one. I'm not sure it belongs here with all these "N" frames.

Model 69, with it's Canada friendly, 4.2 inch barrel.

It's not as pretty as an N-frame, but I love to shoot it. I think it's my favorite S&W now.

I generally shoot 44 Special level loads in it, but I use magnum brass, just in case
I want to upgrade.

Dem mitts

Show off....lol

Big fan of the N frames myself, and own more revolvers starting with the caliber ".44" than I really need. Pictured is my favorite woods carry gun, a 4 inch 629 with Ahrend grips that I used to shoot a decent buck last year.

Larry

The only thing I thought when I saw the picture was "look at the size of them mitts"!!!
