Value check on 629 Classic Hunter II please
Good Evening Folks,
I was hoping to get a value check on this Lew Horton Edition Model 629-4 Classic Hunter II. A friend is offering it up to me for sale and I want to be fair to both of us.
Overall condition is good....however upon taking the grips off I noted some pitting. Any thoughts on a fair price?
Thank you!
Bobby

Anyone have an idea of value? Blue book had nothing for valuations.

Since it's a stainless gun, the pitting is easily disappeared. That's to your advantage, since you can use it as a negotiating point.
It's an uncommon variation and a very desirable N-frame. Forged parts, made at the Performance Center in small numbers. I think it's gotta be a $1,500 to $1,800 gun in a FTF between friends (to me, that means my friend can buy it back any time for the same price).
Recently a very similar gun, NIB, sold on GB for over $3,000.....

Here's another, a -4, that went for over $2,200.....

With that pitting it's lost all of it's collector value. So what's a shooter Hunter worth to you? To me, I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for it and that's only if it comes with the aluminum case that I could use for another gun or resell. Honestly I probably wouldn't even buy it even then as I'd hate it every time I looked at it.

$10 in sandpaper of various grits, little elbow grease, and in 20 minutes that pitting is gone. It's possible to re-do a S&W brushed finish so close it's indistinguishable from factory.
If there's rust on the hammer and/or internals that's a problem. (In the pic it looks like there's something on the hammer. Could be crud, could be rust). The hammer is hard chromed, not stainless. You can only do so much with the hard chrome.

Pitting! I'm out. Takes all collector value. So does Sandpaper

Thank you very much Gentleman. I am looking at $650-$700 given the condition. I would very much like to get rid of the pitting, but realize the collector value is most likely lost

I could live with it for $650-700, at least you wont worry about hiking through the woods with it deer hunting.

I am taking it to see about getting the pitting removed professionally as it is an eyesore....I haven't shot it yet, but it does have a certain character.

I'd still say a $1000. It's a PC gun and prelock. New its $1200 remove the pitting shoot it and enjoy it should shoot.

As others mentioned most collector value is gone. The pitting will not be able to be removed completely. It can definitely be cleaned up to where it is not a eye sore like it is now. There still will be pits. Don't care how professional of a job you get that much and deep pitting will not be removed completely.

Just make sure there is no pitting inside the barrel and remove the side plate before you buy it to make sure there is no pitting inside either.

Stainless pitting tends to be localized but rather deep. Wouldn't count on a good looking cleanup in this case, esp. on that large flat area.
But, as above, if it's for shooting/hunting rather than collecting and the bore, etc.'s good, then add camo paint or similar and worry not. If the price is acceptable!

The pitting looks pretty superficial to me. With the stocks on the gun looks fabulous. With the prices being bandied about in this thread this gun could be a gold mine to a flipper.
