Looking at getting another 500S&W. I bought one years ago when they first came out but sold it. I will admit im addicted to big bore revolvers. I also have a new addition Lipseys Superblackhawk Ruger 454 Bisley. Technically that 454 is all the revolver i need for handgun hunting. But every time i walk into the gun shop and see a 500S&W for sale it calls to me.. Dont help when i watch hunting revolver videos and they talk up the 500 either. Lol.. Anyway. Theres a brand new one for sale with the solid front with the ported holes and 8 3/8 barrel for $1,070 at the one gun shop and then theres a used one with 8 3/8 barrle with the Hi fiz sight and interchangeable compensator for $889.90!. Which one would you get??

I have a 460 with the Hi Viz sight, and removable compensator. I love the sight, and it is easy to clean the comp with it removed. Take the money you save, and buy more ammo. Seems simple to me

I prefer the interchangeable comp no matter what the barrel length, so I would buy the used one

WOW,,, the 500 looks like a monster!! :D

Is the 500 any louder than a 44MAG??

I do not know if I have ever seen any data,,,
I would love to hunt with one,, but, not if I needed hearing protection.

I can stand one round of 44,,, out in the woods,,,,
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Yes much louder.

I dont know.. with it being only a $180 dollar difference im sort of leaning to the new one. I guess it dont matter tho since even the used one would still be covered under a lifetime warranty. Tough call..

Definitely the one with the interchangeable comp if you're planning on shooting cast lead bullets in it.

.
Ive heard of people shoting the led bullets in the solid barrel 500 with just the ports with no issues.

The X Frame S&Ws are loud and they kink. Anything that helps reduce recoil on these big revolvers is good.

I had a .460 8 3/8 with removable comp, and I liked it with the comp. I would take the one with the removable comp over the no comp version. I am not a fan of ported pistols, but with the recoil, noise, and gases generated with the x-frames they are a natural for use with a comp, as the comps work best with high velocity/large gas producing rounds I think.
The warranty is for the original owner only, and requires product registration within 30 days of purchase. S&W repairs firearms to people who are not the original owner, but they do not have to.
Here are links to pages on the warranty for S&W products from the S&W site.

Count me among the removable comp fans. Easier to clean and more effective (IMHO), than the one with the holes burned or drilled in the barrel.

In light of the warranty clarification i would definitely go with brand new. I rarely buy used anyway.

Im mainly looking at the 8 inch barrel version. With that said the 4" is really intriguing. What the max affective range of the 4"?. Could it be used for handgun hunting. How much velocity does it lose over the 8??

There's a lot of powder to burn, so the 4" (which really is more like 3 1/4") sacrifices a lot of velocity. The purpose of the 4" is more for packability and bear defense.

If the weight of the 8 3/8" is any issue, consider the half-lug 6 1/2" version that gets very close to the potential velocity of a 8 3/8" but weighs about 10 oz less.

But imho, you may want to keep your eyes out for Performance Center models that come up for good deals every once in awhile. And generally, you can find any of the factory models for less than $900 at places like gunbroker.

Actually you don't lose that much velocity. With jacket bullets and correct powder velocity difference will be about 150 to 200 fps. With lead you will experience another 25-50 fps.

Not enough to worry about if hunting.

Each gun is equally accurate - the user needs to be competent with the gun chosen.

Thats not much velocity loss at all if thats the case. I like lighter more compact guns. My Ruger Bisley 454 Super blackhawk is very light. I just picked up my S&W model 327 Performance Center 2" 357mag today that i ordered. . That thing is super light.

If you want lighter just go with the 500ES, 2-3/4" bbl. (only 1/4" shorter than the 4" bbl model which is actually 3" minus comp) at 52.5 oz.

I like the 4" better just because it has i longer top and i want to put a scope on it or red dot. It will be used for hunting mostly. Thats mainly why in really trying to research the powerand velocity difference between it and the 8"..
