About a year and a half ago I purchased an NOS 4" 617 no-lug barrel from Numrich for a .327 project that never got off the ground. After looking at it in my gun safe for over a year, I decided it needed a gun attached to it. I bought a nice 6" 617 no dash for a reasonable price and installed the new barrel. All went very well. The barrel indexed perfectly so no lathe work was needed. Set the gap at .006 and added a set of refinished combats. I think it turned out OK. I believe the barrel is a 617-1 (that a very few were made) because it does not have the matte finish and does not have and the flat muzzle crown that the Ashland's do. Am I correct about the barrel or were these made for later models? Sorry about the quality of the pics, this is my first time posting pictures.

A beautiful .22 you have there.....Always wanted one of those Ashlands but was too late.......REALLY wanted one of those 617 mtn guns.....Smith built a few....Almost in secret......Allowing us peasants to miss the boat on them too....

I have never understood, being a capitalist and all, the idea behind not making regular catalog items of the revolvers everybody wants. The 617 with a standard configuration barrel, the 3 inch 19 and 66, the 5 inch K38, the 5 inch Model 29/629, etc.

I think such models would still sell if introduced today.

That looks very good, nice job!

Here's "Ashland" guns for comparison.

S&W missed the boat when these weren't made as a cataloged item IMHO.
