I am thinking of getting a compensator for my 629 44 caliber magnum. Has anyone had any experience with a compensator on a .44 maganum?

I recently got a almost new, very lightly used, 7.5 inch 629 Light Hunter. It is a current model in the S&W line up and has a compensator built in. I shot it at the range last week and liked it a lot. I compared it with my 8 3/8 inch 629 PC Hunter. I put a hundred or so rounds through them at a 25 yard range. I can't say I noticed much difference between them but I was shooting my reloads which I load pretty mild for fun at the range. I think I'll have to try some fully loaded magnum rounds to see if the comp has much effect. I'll try it next trip to the range.

My view is that compensators are productive of only more blast, noise, dirt and flash.
If you think you need one, drop back a cartridge or drop back your load.
Anything that needs a comp is excessive and not worth shooting.
Many big game guides won't accept clients with comps.
Miserable to be near when shot and miserable to shoot.

Magnaport is probably your only option unless you want to seriously modify you firearm, and/or maintain the current profile. i have a light hunter with the built in compensator and a 1-500 RSR that was magnaported. My first 29 was an 8 3/8" that also was magnaported. The built in compensator adds a good 1/2" to the overall length.

Miserable to shoot? Not so much. I also have a 629-4 6 1/2" PowerPort that's just plain fun to shoot.

I seem to remember a clamp on Comp for the blues model 29 from a long time ago, I think Smith made it. I might be misremembering but if you found one it should fit as the barrel profile is the same I think.

I've got a 1911 commander length bbl with a comp on it....it's totally different than shooting my 7.5" 629 with ports.
It's a trade off to me. Yes it helps muzzle rise, and to a lesser extent recoil; but, does also produce blast & flash which is more in the shooters face....especially with the shorter bbls. It doesn't bother me as much on my 629 (but is still somewhat annoying for target shooting), but I won't buy another short bbl gun with a comp/port on it.

Ridge--l have a 629 Light Hunter that l really like.Has a low mounted 2x Leupold EER.l allowed mr 75vette shoot it last year in Gainesville..He liked it WAY too much and shot it Way too well.
It stays home now and out of his hands..The secret to its great pointing ability is low scope placement. It's almost perfect balance helps too.. I may bring it to our next match just to torture him a little
