I decided I couldn't live with all the bluing flaking off the 29-4. So called smith on the gun and asked about prices, and also looked on there website just to be sure.
I picked the Standard Polish & Blue - $220
Here are the Prices listed on S&W website.
{more of my letter follows below the prices.}
Auto pistol 3rd Generation Action Package ($165)
M&P Pistol Action Package ($120)
Combat Revolver Package Medium/Large Frame (Stainless $265 / Carbon $325)
Master Revolver Action Package ($165)
Outdoor Package Large Frame - N ($200)
Finishing - Revolvers
High Bright Polish (Blue, Stainless Steel or Nickel) - $275
Glass Bead Nickel (except Stainless) - $220
Standard Polish & Blue - $220
Glass Bead Blue & Stainless Steel - $170

Today I get a quote from S&W in the mail for $368.00
$45.00 -for firearms estimate and range test
$220.00 -for standard polish and blue
$90.00- for labor
$13.00 for freight
Now Maybe I am wrong, and please correct me if I am. But I guess I thought it would be $220.00 Plus the shipping and I can understand the firearms estimate and range test. But I guess I thought the $90.00 labor was in the price of the $220.00.
And there is nothing on my quote that says there is anything wrong with the gun .
I also did some searches on here before I decided what to do, and the prices the members were saying they paid was also $220.00

Do yourself a favor any use anyone else for the reblue .The current factory blueing process is rather delicate to most commonly used gun solvents. Its a shame now that they can finally offer a nice polish, but offer an inadequate blueing.

I'm with you. I would assume $220 included the labor. Unless the labor cost is highly variable per gun. Then I would list it as $220 + labor.

I'm glad you shared this. I was thinking of getting a beater collectible then re bluing it. But that estimate makes spending the difference between a shooter and a nice gun a no brainer.

Do a search. I asked about re-bluing a while back from Smith and got some good feedback. Good luck.

A good friend and range officer at my local indoor range bought a new blue Model 29 several months ago. After about 6 months of ownership the blue finish began chipping off the cylinder and the crane. He sent the gun back to S&W and they in turn returned it to him a few weeks later without repairing it.S&W said it was normal wear and not covered.

He had purchased the gun from Davidson's so he shipped the gun to Davidson's who then sent it to S&W.

About a month later he got his repaired Model 29 back.

Have it blued elsewhere.

I would sell the gun and find a better condition gun in hopes that the problem does not duplicate itself.......

I sent back a 29-2, but more than a few years ago. They reblued the gun, turned the barrel and recut the forcing cone, and replaced a bunch of screws and springs.
They only charged for the reblue, no added fees, and the gun came back perfect.

A couple of years ago I sent two Model 27-2's to S&W for refinishing. They charged a flat rate (which was listed on their website) for the refinish and reblue. They charged extra for a rear sight for the 6 inch gun (which I bought without the sight). The only other charge was shipping which was not much.

.........But I guess I thought the $90.00 labor was in the price of the $220.00.
And there is nothing on my quote that says there is anything wrong with the gun .

Kinda reminds me of living in Anchorage, AK 35 years ago, there was a Transmission shop that had a price quoted for a couple years on their billboard that said:

Transmission rebuild - $99.95, plus parts and labor.... :)

I wonder what the $99.95 was for, since you pay for the parts and labor... :(

Ohhhhh, those were the days..

9200, I would get on the phone with S&W and question the heck out of this estimate! That is unpardonable IMO, the added on labor charge at the very least! That labor charge should be figured in on the blue refinish cost IMO and not tacked onto the total cost.

I would just get them to send it back to me if they won't drop the labor charge at least and pay their shipping and "range test" fee. And go elsewhere for a better blue job such as Ford's or someone else who does quality finish work.

Odd about the bluing flaking off, I thought bluing was a chemical process that stains (for the lack of a better word) flaking sounds like they are using some kind of plating or painted on finish. I would not be happy.
