I am thinking of adding a 460 to the accumulation and would like suggestions on barrel length. I have been thinking 5 inch, maybe 6 1/2, I think 8 3/8 is too long for me. Range use possible deer hunting. Do the shorter barrels give up too much velocity and should I stick with longer?

I am a huge fan of the 460 round and the Smith design. If you are hunting with the firearm, take your time and you can find someone selling an 8 3/8" version used WITH the carry rig. Makes it a very pleasant gun to hunt with, and in my personal opinion for what this is worth, the ideal barrel length and very manageable recoil. I have two 3" versions and get tired of getting my *** kicked by them. The 8 3/8" you can shoot all day if you can afford it, and go home thinking you were shooting a 357.

Good to know about the recoil of the larger frame. Honestly my 7.5" 454 feels like a 357 Magnum.

All the 460 S&W frames are the same. The difference is all in the barrel with various exotic styles. The short barrels are a huge mismatch with the 460; trying to create a CCW out of a big honking blaster. The short barrels result in a massive blast and flash nice and close to the shooter. My 500 and 460 each have the 8 3/8" barrel.

Never hunted game, but I do hunt "X's" ;)

I chose the 12" XVR. I wanted a target handgun using an optic as an option. Very happy with my choice. I can hold about 5 MOA @ 200 meters benchrest. Shooting my 12" consistently accurate offhand is to say the least a challenge. Keep in mind longer barrels = longer sight radius = better potential accuracy. My thoughs are in your situation if you think the majority of your shooting will be offhand then go with the 8-3/8". If you think you will prefer more shooting off sticks or a bag then go with the 12". My 12" XVR :

I really like my 8 3/8" 460 - it's weight and barrel length make the 460 a fun gun to shoot.

I can't say anything about the shorter barrels, mine is the 8 3/8 Hi Viz version and I love it! You have probably made your decision by now but this is my .002

Well, I have the 8 3/8" and the PC 7.5" 460's and honestly, you could use either for what you are looking to do. The main difference between the two is the weight distribution, the 8 3/8" is lighter in the barrel, the weight feels like it is back at the receiver. The 7.5" feels heavier in the barrel....which is what I prefer. That said, I wouldn't go any less than the 5" barrel length if you really intend to hunt with it. That is my next 460 to try out! I love the look of it!
