Other than maybe some one off custom it appears to me that the 27-8 run is only 8 shooters and 8 shooters are all 27-8s. I guess it makes sense that an 8 shooter would be a separate revision number.

How does the 27-8 compare to the 627 8 shot? I think the 27-8s all came out of the performance center with their special attention applied. Not sure about the 627s.

IIRC, the -7 was not a custom but was a limited run of 200 from the PC shop and had 8 shots.
Also pre-lock.

Mine is a -7 variety without the lock. I was thinking it was a -8. Brain fart. So the -7 and -8 are all 8 shots. -8 added the lock? I think I have it figured out now. They stopped making 27s with the -6 model. Then they the did the special run of 200 -7 models from the PC. Then they did another special run from the PC of 8 shots (all "Registered Magnums"?) and added the lock for the -8 some years later. Some years after the -8 the -9 "classic" came about as a rebirth 27-6 in 6 shots. The -7 and -8 are all going to be a product of the PC.

The 27-7 and the 27-8 were both 8 shot models. Here is my 5 inch -8.

Like the added screw and bead front sight of the -8 but like the lockless -7. Like the shorter barrel too. Mine is 6 1/2"..

Did the -8 come with those grips or did you change them out? Is the -8 square or round grip frame? My -7 is a round frame and the old smooth target stocks I have don't fit it.

The dash 8 did not come with those grips.I had one, also a five incher. These, along with other barrel lengths were offered by the PC as modern day"Registered magnums" . I also had a PC 27-7,which was a 6.5 inch barrel gun with a tear drop shaped hammer spur.
Both were wonderful guns.

As of today, Smith and Wesson has only produced 6 variations of carbon steel model 27s that chamber 8 rounds. Here are all 6 variations pictured in the configurations that they were shipped in from the factory.

The only differences between the 8 shot model 27/327/627 revolvers is the materials used for their construction. Basicly all are all still model 27s and compare very favorably to each other

With the exception of the 2 1/2" 327 Night Guard, the heavy barrel 4" 627 and the 4" 627 pro, ALL 8 shot, 357 Magnum revolvers from Smith and Wesson have been produced by the Performance Center. There are many dozen different Performance Center 8 27/327/627 revolver configurations that have been offered over the last two decades.

One additional difference between the -7 and -8 engineering revisions of the model 27 is that the -8 marked the return to square frames while all -7s are round butt frames.

No I changed the original stocks for some old style factory target stocks. I hate the new factory target stocks with a passion. The -8 is a square butt frame.

I wish the -7 had a square butt. I have a box of square butt target stocks but nothing for the round butt. The PC "conversion" stocks are just a bit thin for my hand. Then again I don't know if I'll ever actually shoot it. It's too clean to use. Common dilemma.
