Hi all. I carry a 637 primarily. Over time, I've noticed rust spots develope pretty quick on the case hardened trigger and hammer. It's an easy fix, I just scrub and oil them regularly. I'd still like to replace them with stainless. Where can I find an SS replacement trigger & hammer? Every search online comes up showing multiple trigger job options. That would be great if I wanted a trigger job or spring kit. However, I mostly pocket carry and it's very humid where I live. I'm tired of having to scrub and wipe my hammer and trigger every couple of days. Could I use any j frame parts? If I get older SS parts, will they be interchangeable? Thanks.

I'm not a S&W expert, but I'm pretty sure all of S&W's triggers/hammers have always been case hardened. The only other variety I know of is the flash chromed ones they used for a period, and the newer MIM stuff they use now.

What you need to do is find a GOOD lubricant that will stay put and not dry up when the travel medium evaporates. Look into something like Slip2000 products.

As I understand it, when the original Stainless Steel Model 60 was introduced the Hammers and Triggers were originally made of Stainless Steel, however there were many problems manufacturing them back then. S&W's solution was to use Flashed Chromed, Carbon Steel Hammers and Triggers and they sort of gave the impression of being Stainless - but were much easier to manufacture and still offered excellent rust resistance. It is also not too uncommon to see a case colored Hammer and Trigger on a Stainless gun as well, although not as common as the flashed chrome ones.

To find a set of Stainless Steel ones today is like looking through a haystack to find the needle. Unless an aftermarket Company that I am unaware of is manufacturing them (don't know of any) I believe you are SOL on this one. I'd stick with the Flashed Chrome version (should still be available from parts sellers on-line) and you should not get any rust with them as they are petty darn tough! Of course the simplest option is to just keep up after your Case Colored ones on heir now.

chief38's right on about S&W's history with actual stainless steel triggers and hammers: brief and unsuccessful. The flash chromed carbon steel ones are often mistaken for stainless.

OP, if it's a bad problem and staying on top of it a nuisance, I'd send my small parts out to Robar for NP3, or one of the several quality shops that hard chrome.

Thanks for the info everyone. That pretty well confirmed my suspicions. Nobody makes SS replacements. Maybe I'll try duracoat. It won't last forever but it seems like it's gonna be the cheapest fix. I wonder why SS trigger/hammer never worked out for S&W. Oh darn.
