S&W MODEL 36 FIRING PIN

Hello, I have just purchased a used model 36. Beautiful gun. The firing pin is located on the hammer and appears to be pretty loose. It can move up and down and "1/8th and side to side a little less. I am going to the range tommorw to shoot. Is this something to be worried about. Besides that the gun seems to be in very good shape. Just a little wear around the cyclenders. Also the serial number is 1J2043. I was wondering if anyone can help me find out the manufacturing date and what not.

It's normal for hammer mounted firing pins to move up and down.There's a tiny hammer nose spring between the nose(pin) and the hammer.A little side looseness is nothing to worry about but if its a bit too much the rivet can be peined a little more or replaced.
 
Nothing to worry about.

The hammer mounted firing pin is supposed to rotate a bit up and down. It will also move (less) side to side.

And, contrary to StakeOut, the J-frames did not have a hammer nose spring. Only the N-frames and, usually, the magnum K-frames.

And yes, the motion you mention is a design feature. If the hammer nose didn't move there would be a problem!

I have 2 K-frames, a Model 15 and a Model 64 with hammer nose springs. Bought the 15 brand new so it came that way. The 64 is used. Neither one is a Magnum, of course.
 
Hello everyone thanks alot !!! I just left the range fired 50 rounds of 158g through it. My second time reloading it I had a misfire. Ammo was cheap stuff but I purchased it today from the range. That was the only misfire I had thought it might be the ammo but I took a closer look and saw that one of the chambers is hitting lighter than the rest. All of them hit hard except one but all hit on center. Wondering if anyone has any input on what could of been the issue. Man do I love this fun I just want to make sure its as relaible as it should be as I want to carry this.Thanks in advance and have a great day !!

Just for your own information since we're all not as smart as we may think we are.

My flat latch 1959 Model 36 had a hammer nose spring.

How many rounds did you put through the chamber with the light strike? If it was only one or two it may have been a hard primer. I would see if it repeats consistently and have it inspected by a gunsmith if so.
 
I put about 9 rounds through it it gradually got a little better as far as how hard it hit ur still not as quite hard as the other 4 cyclinders .the second round didn't go off but the other 8 did beside that's shoots great actually love the gun just want to make sure that doesn't happen again maybe I'll drop it off to the local gunsmith he does great work
