Default Red Dot on a R8 or TRR8 ??

So normally it is very important to have Tall sights on a pistol with a red dot, like a Leupold Delta Point, to co witness with the red dot to help find the dot quickly.

Curious how does this works on a R8 or TRR8 mounted on the top rail with no co witness ? What is the difference ? How do you find the dot ?

It's not important at all. If you raise the gun and can't find the dot, then your grip is improper.

Mounted a Truglo on my TRR8 and won a mano a mano challenge match first time out.
No sights issue at all.

I've got a burris ff3 on my TRR8. It's pretty awesome, especially with 357 at distance. Been working on draws closer in to aquire the dot quickly. It will take some reps to get your draws down and not hunt for the dot but it will come.....just have to put in the practice time.

I went old school with mine. I don't bother to co witness . I either shoot it with the dot or (occasionally) loosen the two hand crews and shoot it without. Love this gun!

Yes. Practice. The rear of the Burris Fast Fire has a center vertical white line to help you. With repetitions the red dot will quickly come into view from a draw.

C-More Railway is what some use for Steel Challenge competition. The red dot is easy to pick up.

I'm an Eotech 512 fan and mounted one on my TRR8. It is now my favorite gun to shoot.Easy sight acquisition and well balanced.

Here is mine with my vortex venom. No need for iron sights when using the red dot.

Like it so much that I have them mounted on a Buckmark that I use for speed steel and another on the shotty I use for 3-gun.

Easy to pick up the reticle. Something that's not always the case with other reflex type optics.

RMR on my R8.... As some have said..... It takes practice to acquire the dot.... This rig is a total tack driver. I've since moved the red dot as far back on the rail as possible..... I will own this pistol until I die.......

Thanks for the info. I will have to decide a small sight like an RMR or Delta Point, or a smaller tube type from various companies.

To my mind, taller sights is not about finding the dot quickly, but to serve as a back up should the dot fail. My own experience is that acquiring the dot quickly is about consistently presenting the weapon in such a way that the dot is immediately in the shooters field of view.

The difference is, perhaps, the intended use for the R8 or TRR8. If it is a range toy, or a competition only gun, the back up irons might not be necessary at all. If intended to be a self defense weapon where someone's life might be at stake, backup sights might be more important to the user.

My .02. YMMV of course.

I forgot I posted this thread, and never added what I did. I had started another thread with a picture with what I did.

Different group here so I thought to add a picture to follow up.

Aimpoint Micro. Easily the best site I have ever owned. Downside - North of $700, but the accuracy of the TRR8 (Left) or M&P R8 (Right) deserve it. Grouping at 75 to 80 yards from sandbag in tree stand.

I know this thread is 6 years old. But I would hope to find fellow R8/TRR8 owners , to tell them to avoid use of the top rail on these guns. Use of the metal top factory rail and almost any optic will loosen the barrel with enough rounds through them.
It is better to mount any optic on most any of these newer style Revolvers to the rear as possible, by removing the rear sight and using the 3 existing holes, to attach a mount/ optic.
In my experience.
Lou

While I do not have an optic on my TRR8, I totally agree with Lou_the_welder

I just recently starting putting the RITON MPRD2 RED DOT mini sight on my firearms. This one on my Model 617 is mounted with the Tasco Optima 2000 mount for D&T Smith & Wesson revolvers

I have become fond of this optic and now have a total of 6 of them on various firearms including my MP5/357. One is going on a P220 next.

I'm curious about this because I see a few R8 revolvers with scopes...plus I planned to mount one too...I'm interested if anyone with a scoped R8 has had issues.

What's the part number or link to that Tasco mount? I really like that setup.
Will it work on any S&W with an adjustable sight that screws on or does it need to be the ones with two extra screws through the top strap?

Again. If you mount any sight in place of the rear sight you shouldn't have any problems.
I don't think S&W planned on alot of owners to put many rounds through a 327 having anything attached to the shroud. What happens under recoil , is the weight of an attached optic and heavy metal rail loosens the nut in front of the barrel.

The nut/shroud loosened on me twice! Even after the factory tightened the nut twice. Again. It even happened a third time during and thought I could use the "ewk" tool to tighten . It still got loose.
My 327 has about 10,000 rounds in it now. And I happily shoot it without anything attached to the shroud. Attaching anything to the shroud should be avoided- but by all means. You don't have to believe me.

Picture of revolver when the nut loosened: With the nut loosened, you can unscrew with your fingers to see how it all comes together. If it does come loose, I recommend the factory for tightening. They know how much force to put on an aluminum/ scandium frame without cracking it.

Picture of the tool. I still haven't figured out how to tighten it. And don't want to. It's still under factory warranty. And I don't know how much force they use at the factory. Cracking that frame would be expensive.

This is how I choose to shoot it now. The shroud and nut don't give me problems anymore.

I have posted in most of the 327 R8/ TRR8 threads. A simple search will find them going back a few years. My posts are meant as a warning as what may happen with plenty of rounds with this design, on these Revolvers, putting any weight on the shroud.

Is that only for this particular revolver?...because I see lots of Rugers and other revolvers that are scoped...just wondering if the actual gun material makes a difference...

Yes. Only this revolver, when using the supplied factory top rail.

If you mount something in the rear, in place of the rear sight, it should be fine.

Your red dot looks good where it is...I might move mine a smidgen forward from there but otherwise that's a good looking setup...

That's a Weigand Combat(weig-a-tinny rail) SWMINIB in black. And they also have a SWMINIS in silver.
