Is 629-2 more collectible than 629-1 or 3?

A friend of mine has a 629-2 with 8 3/8 barrel that he says is in pristine condition with wood target grips. No box.I have always had 29's and only one 629 because I was never a stainless fan,but never realized until today after checking the SCSW, that the 629-2 was only made 1 year. Haven't looked at it yet or have pics but going to look at it in a few days. Tried gunbroker but a 629-2 has not sold on there in the last 90 days and none for sale there now. Since the -2 was only made 1 year, is it more collectible than 629 other dashes or no dash?

Thanks and have a Blessed Evening!

I see the later 629-2 has the Endurance package (redesigned for use of heavier loads) which may be desirable for heavy .44 Magnum use, but I don't have the impression this makes it more collectible even though it was only made for about a year. Doc44 may be along to comment.

The 629-2 that you are looking at only has the "endurance package" as mentioned by another poster, if it is stamped 629-2E.

Time line for 629 engineering changes:

1979 - Start production of 629.
1982 -1 Eliminated the pinned barrel and recessed chambers.
1988 -2 New yoke retention system.
1989 -2E Endurance package. Hardened yoke / frame.
1989 -3 Longer stop notch. Bolt block installed. Fixed hand.
1993 -4 New rear sight leaf and extractor. Drill & tap frame.
1997 -5 Eliminate cyl. stop stud. MIM trigger/hammer. Float firing pin.
2001 -6 Internal lock.
2005 -7 2-piece barrel.

The 629 no dash is the top choice for a collector. The dash 3 and 4 are best choice for a pre MIM shooter.
The -2 lacks the endurance package but does have the new yoke retention system so it's better than a -1.

So from the looks here the 629 no dash (pinned & recessed) would be the most desirable then the 629-4 ( endurance pkg. and no mim parts)?

Whew man I got scared for a second there my well carried and shot -1 would not make the grade as a collector gun ,but I sure have stumbled across a lot of roots and stumps with it thru the years ,man that gun has heard me say some ugly words and watched me eat a lot of jerky thru tne years .

There's a -8 now, also. Just in the last few years. IINM, what sets it off is it has the new style 4-screw side plate. A feature very rarely seen on a stainless frame.

The no dash only because it's the only P&R'd stainless N frame. The dash 3 and 4 because they "should be" the most durable pre MIM shooters. That does not mean the others suck, just that from a collector or shooters standpoint these are preferred.
Back in the late 80's, I had a dash 2 that I did a lot of load experimenting with running 180 to 300gr. full power loads thru with no issues at all.

You wouldn’t happen to have a picture would you?
It was the product code 170334 Hunter. It's the only 4-screw stainless N-frame I'm aware of.
