Ordered a 640 Pro Today
Well after much deliberation, I ordered a 640 Pro today. It’s actually at my dealer, just need to pick it up. I did see some LE trade 640s for 399$ locally, but considering the new Pro was only a couple hundred more here, it seemed to be a good choice. Any comments on the 640 Pro? I like the sights and weight for practice. Carry is usually a 442 Pro.

Love mine, awesome to shoot especially with the CT grips ( my personal preference).

The pro is the only current S&W model that I would like to own but don't currently. It is one fine looking revolver.

The 640Pro is my most-carried revolver (I'm usually carrying a semiauto, however). With the 640Pro, I'm also usually carrying my 642-1 as a 2nd gun.

Got mine at the end of November. Traded my 640-3 I had for two years and loved. Love the night sights, the action is smooth as glass, the finish and fit is way over a regular 640-3. Shooting is a Joy. .357 full load 158gr FMJ is No pain at all and shooting .38 is like shooting a .22 with the S&W rubber 3 finger grips. And of course, No Stupid Lock. It's my daily concealed carry and fits perfectly in my front pocket with an Uncle Mike's 36 holster.

I love mine...dolled it up a little:
But I also got one of the 640-1s from the place you're talking about there in KY (when they were less expensive):
Both are great guns, and you won't be disappointed in your Pro Series.

Howdy edcato!
Congratulations on the new 640 Pro! While I don't have the Pro Series, my 640-1 is my EDC. I don't leave home without it. The 640's are great carry guns!

Dieseltech56, you might try a pancake holster (OTW). I carry mine that way 80% of the time.

Thanks, and too funny! The grips are from a German company: Karl Nill Griffe (which means grip, a verb, auf Deutsch). I don't "stock" my gun, I grip it!
Here's a shot of how I ccw my 640 Pro every day (although the image shows my M&P 340 in the rig, before I got the 640 Pro): Lobo Gun Leather Enhanced Pancake. Sheer genius!

Edcato,
What were some of your decision points in selecting the 640 Pro?
Thanks, White Cloud

Actually wanted a 640 PRO too, until I reminded myself that I don't like flimsy moon clips and was going to put CT laser grips on it anyway(due to my eyesight). Given that, the base 640 was my smart choice.

You do know you don't have to use moon clips? It can be loaded with 5 singles, no problem.

I also own a 640 Pro. It has evolved into a nice gun, but had a somewhat rocky road getting there.
Mine must have been a Friday afternoon gun. It was sent from S&W directly to me in a warranty deal as a replacement for a broken 642. I ponied up the extra $$$ over the value of my unrepairable 642 and after more than five months of waiting my new 640 Pro showed up at my local gun shop.
Out of the box it had numerous issues with fit and finish. Topping the list was a damaged front sight, the rear sight so loosely fitted that it fell off the gun at the gun shop, and a canted barrel.
Long story short, after four trips back to S&W and two replacement barrels later I now have a well made 640 Pro revolver which shoots to point of aim.
Mine wears a set of S&W Crimson Trace grips to augment the night sights. These originally came on a 642. I find in addition to the laser dot aiming, these grips provide an extra level of recoil control and comfort when I shoot magnum rounds.
The night sights are an improvement over the stock sights you get on a standard 640. For me, the white rings surrounding the rear tritium vials were too big relative to the size of the front white ring. This was a bit distracting and slowed my aim. My fix was to take a black Sharpie to the rear white rings. My eyes are now drawn to the single white ring of the front sight and the gun points quicker. At night I still get the standard three green dots.
Although reloading a J frame under stress can be a challenge and is hopefully an unlikely event, the 640 Pro gives you options. I generally carry loose rounds in the gun and will carry extra rounds on both a speed strip and in a moon clip.
If I were to need a fast reload the moon clip is the answer. However, the speed strip allows me to top off one or two without dumping a moon clip still containing good rounds. Regardless of how you carry your gun and spares, you have options.
Congratulations on your 640 Pro! We are expecting pictures and a range report.

At what distance do you adjust the laser to cross the manual sites/bullet impact?
Reason I ask is my wife’s 642 has the same crimson laser grips and the laser does NOT aim where the bullet impacts. At least not at say 15 feet or so.
Maybe a better way to ask. for up close and personal snubby SD situations, what distance (most commonly) is that where the laser should be adjusted for point of impact?

Personally I prefer to have them cross at 25 yards -- even though it's unlikely I'd be using a J frame at that distance.
The reason is that for any distance under 25 yards, my point of impact will be off at most the amount of the offset between the laser and the barrel (or about 1 inch). At 15 feet, my point of impact would be off by about 3/4". I can live with that.
But if instead I zeroed to 15 feet, and then had to shoot at 25 yards for some reason, point of impact would be off by about 5 inches.

My gun’s point of aim and point of impact are roughly the same at 20-25 feet. I adjust my laser to be coincidental with my irons at this distance.
Below are some of my accuracy tests with iron sights shot off a sandbag rest after the second barrel replacement. When using the laser my rested groups are a little tighter.

Hi Dieseltech56!
There are numerous options depending on how you like to carry. Quite a few pocket holsters, I like the Mika myself, with a DeSantis Superfly in 2nd place.
Simply Rugged makes a pancake holster, the Silver Dollar, as does Lobo like Two-Bit Cowboy mentioned.
If you want something a little smaller than a pancake holster, both Galco and DeSantis make a belt slide that I like. Galco calls theirs the Stinger, DeSantis the Mini Scabbard.
I don't carry inside the waistband anymore, so I can't help with that, but I'll bet that there are a few options in that style also.
Hope this helps!
