May be a strange question. Have a 586 no dash great shooter. Was wondering if a person can install a 7 shot 586 cylinder in place of the orgional 6 shot?

Just buy a 7 shot 586 or 686. I have a 6 and 7 shot 686. You will be happier.

Your biggest problem will be finding a 7 round 586 cylinder, there are only 3 586s in current production, and the only 7 shot, the L-Comp, is a different finish than the 4 and 6 inch 586 classics.

I can imagine why anyone would want to mess with a 586 no dash. As stated , you have a great shooter and you are , in my opinion and with all due respect , opening the door to possible problems and certain devaluation.

Well I have one, a factory 586-7 with a seven shot cylinder. Its a beauty and a damn fine shooter. I installed the 'Plug' and have ordered a new set of grips from Altamont. Pictures soon.

I think there was only 500 made like this. But I have this one.

Found this information:

S&W 586-7 7-SHOT .357 MAG (RARE)

SMITH & WESSON MODEL 586-7
.357 MAGNUM
7-SHOT
4" BARREL
BLUED FINISH
DELUXE FACTORY GRIPS
GREAT CONDITION
ORIGINAL BOX/PAPERS
• CATEGORY Handguns
• MANUFACTURER Smith & Wesson
• CALIBER 357 Magnum
• ACTION Double / Single Action

FIREARM TYPE Revolver

THIS A FAIRLY RARE 7 SHOT 586 (NOT 686 WHICH ARE QUITE COMMON). AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH IT SEEMS AS IF ONLY 500 WERE MADE IN 4" BARREL CONFIGURATION AND 500 IN THE 6".

Mehutch ,

Very nice -7 you have there. I am not knocking 7 shot revolvers , just saying that I personally would not modify a 586 no-dash.

You are probably best served to reaching out to Smith and Wesson and asking them about getting a seven shot Cylinder for you and retiming the action as the hand will likely need some adjustment. It can be done from what I understand, but it isn't plug and play.

I personally would not change a no dash 586, but its your gun, not mine.

I agree with the others, don't alter your no dash 586. If the 7th round is important to you, buy one of the many 686's that are available with it.

WELL, I AGREE THAT YOU ARE A LUCKY GUY TO OWN A NO-DASH M586--FOR MORE REASONS THAN ONE. YES, IT CAN BE FITTED WITH A 7 SHOT CYLINDER, AND IT WILL FUNCTION PERFECTLY......

IF YOUR M586 WAS NEVER RETURNED TO S&W FOR THE RECALL, FIRING PINHOLE PROBLEM, YOU ARE REALLY IN LUCK. YOU WOULD KNOW THIS, BECAUSE GUNS THAT HAVE BEEN MODIFIED, ARE STAMPED WITH AN "M", NEAR THE SERIAL NUMBER, IN THE CRANE AREA. THIS MEANS THAT, IF IT ISN'T STAMPED (I BOUGHT 3 USED M686s--NONE HAD BEEN MODIFIED, AS PER THE RECALL), YOUR GUN IS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE SHIPPING, BOTH WAYS, TO THE FACTORY, FOR THE MODS--AT NO COST TO YOU.....

THIS PRESENTS A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY. I PURCHASED A USED, 2 1/2", NO-DASH M686. I WANTED TO TURN IT INTO A RELIABLE EDC/SD WEAPON. NATURALLY, I SENT IT IN FOR THE RECALL, TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF A SEIZED UP CYLINDER, AT THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME......

WHILE IT WAS THERE, I REQUESTED THAT THEY FIT IT WITH A 7 SHOT CYLINDER. THE TOTAL COST OF THE NEW CYLINDER, AND THE LABOR, WAS JUST UNDER $120. THE TURNAROUND TIME WAS ABOUT 3 WEEKS, AND MY ORIGINAL CYLINDER WAS RETURNED TO ME. THE NEW CYLINDER FUNCTIONED PERFECTLY........

I THEN SENT MY REVOLVER TO DENNIS REICHARD, AT SAND BURR GUN RANCH, FOR HIS DELUXE, ACTION JOB. HE IS TOUTED AS "THE BEST S&W GUNSMITH CURRENTY WORKING", BY FAMED, MULTI-CHAMPIONSHIP, PISTOLERO, MASSAD AYOOB. HE PREPS ALL OF AYOOBS GUNS---AND HIS WORK IS SUPERB. MY ACTION IS SLICKER THAN SNOTS ! ! ! I SOLD MY ORIGINAL LIKE NEW, CYLINDER, AND ORIGINAL COMBAT GRIPS, TO EAGER BUYERS, HERE ON OUR FORUM. THAT OFFSET THE COST OF MY PROJECT......

I REPLACED THE COMBATS, WITH A PAIR OF VERY DIRTY, AND WORN, PC MAGNAS, PURCHASED FOR CHEAP MONEY, FROM A FELLOW FORUM MEMBER. A FRIEND OF MINE, SOAKED THE DIRT AND GRIME OUT OF THEM, CHASED THE CHECKERING, AND REFINISHED THEM. A TYLER-T, COMPLETES THE PACKAGE......

FOR ME--- THERE IS NO GOING BACK, WITH THIS GUN, AND I WILL DIE, WITH IT, IN MY POSSESSION. IT WILL BE PASSED ON TO MY SURVIVORS, AS one eye joe's GUN.........

NOW BACK TO YOUR M586, YOU COULD FOLLOW A SIMILAR PLAN. I WOULD KEEP ALL THE ORIGINAL PARTS, WITH YOUR GUN. YOUR GUN IS RARE--UNLIKE MINE. YOU COULD HAVE THE FACTORY DO AN ACTION JOB, WHILE ITS THERE. FROM WHAT I READ ON OUR FORUM, THE DO GREAT WORK. IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD HAVE ALL OF YOUR WORK PERFORMED AT THE FACTORY, TO MAINTAIN YOUR WARRANTY, AND TO DOCUMENT THE PROVENANCE OF YOUR REVOLVER, IF YOU SHOULD WISH TO SELL IT.......

EVEN IF YOUR GUN HAS ALREADY BEEN IN FOR THE RECALL, I WOULD SPEND THE MONEY FOR THE 2 WAY SHIPPING, AND SEND IT INTO S&W. SAVE ALL OF YOUR PAPERWORK, TO PROVE THAT YOUR 7 SHOT CONVERSION, WAS NOT DONE BY BUBBA, ON THE KITCHEN TABLE......
