A LOT of police carried Model 10's in that period.

For the record, Mayberry was in North Carolina.

I've seen some shows in which it seems to be a Model 10, others in which it is clearly a Colt Official Police.

I'd always heard Colt Official Police, too. It was always hard for me to tell because Barney's gun shook so much any time it came out of the holster.

Could be BOTH. He didn't use it that much and they may have ignored continuity on such a minor point and just grabbed a revolver out of the props dept.

I've read both Colt and S&W were used in the series. My guess is both were available and whatever the prop guy grabbed, was placed in the holster. They probably looked the same to Don Knotts.

RW ....

I seem to recall that Barny's sidearm was auctioned off by the studio's property department a few years ago.

That particular pistol was a 4" Colt, Official Police. It may or may not have been in working order and it was missing the knurled knob on the end of the ejector rod.

Gavel price? Between $400.00 and $300.00 with a studio letter IIRC. Sadly, I didn't find out about the auction until it was over.

Maybe that M-10 will come up for auction one day.

Cheers ....

Da Bear

This has been discussed before, and if I recall, our friend Massad Ayoob says he researched it, and it was BOTH the Model 10 S&W and the Colt OP.

Naw, it was neither of the guns you guys mention. Those are 6 shooters. Barney's was a single shot.

Welldoya...ya made my night. I do believe you're right!

BTW, Andy was right to limit him to one round, and not to load it unless he had express permission. Limits the colateral damage...
