After watching some listings on a few sites it seems these are being sold rapidly. I'm just curious why as the 44 mag isn't exactly a mild cartridge to shoot and it isn't cheap either. I found some ammo for about 2 bucks/rd.

Just a few years ago they were a lot less expensive to buy. What's going on here?

Don't know if it's the overall shortage that has driven all gun prices up is the reason but there's definitely been an increase in their prices. I'd love to find a nice 4" 29-2 that I can afford but I'll make do with my 629-1 for the time being.

I don't shoot a ton of magnums through it but enough to be proficient as it's always with me when I head up to the hills for hiking or camping. The .44spls are just a lot of fun. I do have to be more judicious these days until/if the ammo production catches up.

Why not when 9mm is about as expensive right now?

I think it's an echo effect that started some time ago. After the AWB went away, lots of people gorged themselves on ARs, AKs, and wondernines. Eventually they were sated and started looking at other niches like big bore revolvers. Now it's all accelerated as many people wonder if anything will be for sale in a year or two.

My buddy wanted a s&w 500 and after letting him shoot my 44 mag his tuned changed. My point is anyone new to the 44 mag might not like the recoil.

Personally, and I have said this many times, I think that the recoil falls under the context of the juice ain't worth the squeeze. I never could quite figure out the attraction after I finally owned and shot a 629. Before I owned it, yup, gotta have - after, happy to have sold it. ;)

To be fair, I never met a .357 Magnum I didn't like/enjoy shooting and the same goes for a .45 Colt. The .44 Magnum is just not worth the squeeze for any role that I would care to use a revolver for.

I do think a long barreled .44 Magnum is appropriate for handgun hunting if that's your thing. I understand that type of usage. Otherwise, well, you know........... :D

I asked this same question months ago when I was shopping for a 629 yet couldn't find one for under $1000 dollars.

As near as I can figure, it's just because they don't manufacture them in large numbers anymore, and there were a lot of newbie gun-buyers who wanted a gun, but weren't exactly knowledgeable about guns, so they just stuck with guns they saw in the movies. The Model 29 has been in a lot of movies, most notably Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver, in which they were hyped as "The most powerful handgun in the world" and shown/spoken of doing spectacular things like blasting men clear off their feet or otherwise blasting limbs clean off, which obviously would make them highly appee towards folks who are feeling particularly vulnerable.

That's my best guess anyway.

For me, the prospect of buying a S&W 629 has been suspended indefinitely because they're just not worth the inflated prices they're being sold for right now, not to me anyway. Every once in awhile a Performance Center model shows up at a decent price at or just slightly above MSRP, but so far I haven't been in the right place at the right time to get one. I can extremely close to buying a Used Performance Center 629 UDR a few months ago, but it sold a couple of days before the money was deposited, so I ended up buying an H&K USP45 Elite instead. No regrets, as that was another gun that I really wanted.

The best you can do is just shop around and wait until one goes on sale for a decent price. I recommend looking at Performance Center models in particular since they're priced more fairly.

Why the popularity?

It's one of the most versatile handguns on the planet, especially if you handload.

It's also one of the sexiest.

Given your lack of understanding, perhaps the better question is, "Why can't you get with the program?" :)

Love mine

My 629-1 is my favorite revolver to shoot. They are simply gorgeous too, and very accurate. I just shot 8 cylinders full of 44 special today. I love how many different reloads you can make for it. I don't shoot a ton of stout magnum loads, but it's nice to know I can if I'm out in the woods and come across a large unfriendly critter.

It's also fun to hand it to a friend at the range with the admonition to "hold on tight", and then watch the look on their face a split second after the big bang... priceless.

If you have 3 minutes to spare, watch this video for an explanation. If you don't have 3 minutes, skip to 1:49.

Oh, some pretty bad film editing at the end of the clip too. Harry cocks his Model 29, then performs a double action pull. Hollyweird.

I have to admit that Callahan had an influence on my first 29, but the 629's are the result of accuracy, easy to carry, choices in loads from light target to to big game and target. I have gone to the 500's for dinosaurs. Easy recoil, but then again I shoot American 41 & 44 Mag derringers. Just had xray of my hands and wrist on Monday 5/3/2021 and I am good to go for longer than I will live. Besides the 3" 629 is lighter to pack than my 3" 500 SW. My wife prefers Ruger 44's 4" for rainy days, 7.5" scoped for sunny days. Be Safe,

Its the "cool" factor at work here!!! Introduce someone to a 29/629 and let them shoot a few cylinders at milk jugs, pumpkins or mellons and they will all say that's cool "I need to get one for myself!"

I dont think Clint sells as many 29's as he did in the 70's and 80's. I think its uncles, grandpa's, friends and my work buddies that sell more 29/629 today.

Introduce someone new to the shooting sports!!!!

BTW an M1 Garand will light thier eyes up too!!!!

My Mrs. shot my 29 with my home cast, bounced 3 rounds off the red Georgia clay, hit a jug, a clay, then knocked down the board the targets were on and said, "I like this one!".

I know she hit the targets on ricochet cause I made a video of it.

I think reloading is key to truly appreciating the 29/629. All 44 magnum loads don't have to send shockwaves down your arm. I load at appx. 1000 fps and is plenty strong enough to topple a 55 lb steel ram at 200 meters in IHMSA competition. And as mentioned by others above the 44 magnum is just a very fine looking six shooter. The bug bit the fool outta me!

75Vette for the win.:)
All guns are climbing in price now. The 29/629s are along for the ride. I don’t think S&W has made as many as they have other chamberings. The 44 magnum cartridge is a very versatile round and can be hand loaded from mild to pretty wild. 6.7 grains of Unique with a 240 gr. SWC is my favorite load. Easy to shoot and plenty of power.
My current 629-4 is used mostly for bowling pin shots and just for fun shooting. If the OP gets to shoot one he will see the allure fo the 29/629.
