Have a chance at a 617-6 for $700. Is that fair market, good deal, or a bit high?

Any info I can get on it? Looks to be post-lock. I have a Mountain Gun and I was warned that it would not be my last S&W, and I suspect it's right. I love the build quality, trigger, accuracy from it. I had a Ruger MK II Government Target that I just sold because I didn't care for the grip angle or trigger pull and debating replacing it with this 617.

Unless the gun has a lot of wear or other problems $700 would be a fair price, and some will consider a low price. I have a 617-6, 10 shot, and I have nothing bad to say about it. It does have the lock, but that has been a non-issue. It is as solid and as accurate as any of my other Mod 17's (4).

I picked up a 6-shot pre-lock 617-1 this past winter for $800, the going rate around here. Another recently sold for the same price and there is now a 10-shot pre-lock up for the same price, too. If you like it, get it. You won't be disappointed. I love mine - shoots like a laser with no recoil worth mentioning. Just one caveat about which you need to be forewarned-that was my second Smith revolver. Now I'm up to 5 and counting. So many choices, so little time.

4" or 6" barrel? I have two, both 4".

Picked up a 617-5 six inch 6 shot in January at a local auction for $725 and was glad to get it at that price. Came with box/papers. A 2005 model.

Yeah it has the lock but the fit, build quality and lock up are among the best of any Smith I have owned and it is quite a good shooter as well.

If the 617-6 checks out condition wise it would be a great revolver to have and you will soon forget the $700 you paid with all the shooting fun you'll have at the range!

Buy it! I bought one a few months ago and it is a blast to shoot. My wife shot it the first time with me and she said " I like it!." Enough said. Tried to load a picture, but living in rural Missouri has only one done side, very very very slow internet, but that is the only downside. Sorry no pictures. Well I guess picture showed up.

Congrats! I have the same gun in 4" and LOVE IT!!! It's fit and finish are outstanding and it's just a blast to shoot. I carry it (Simply Rugged pancake holster) here around our little chicken ranch quite often. This time of year the first 3 shots are snake-shot and the rest are CCI solids.

If we ever came to that scenario where "you can only keep one"... I'd have a really tough time justifying any other gun to keep over this 617-6. It's just ideal in so many ways and .22 LR ammo is by far the most plentiful on Earth.

I bought my 4 inch 617 a few years ago. Looked for months in local gun shops to find one. I recall the owner of the largest telling me they were made in batches, and in between batches he simply couldn't get any.

Finally, I was looking at the web site of Farm King, a very small chain of family owned stores. They had one two hours away in Iowa. They transferred it to a store in Illinois 30 minutes from me. I paid $799. I recall when I picked it up the store manager said he had to open it to see why a .22 revolver cost so much.

The lock doesn't bother me, since the gun is not for self defence. I had TK Customs do an action job on it, and my 686. They are both butter smooth and a pleasure to shoot.

Buy it! I can't imagine you will regret it.

The seller was an hour away and basically had no free time to meet up so someone closer to them bought it. Missed out on this one...oh well

I have a 6 inch 22 revolver that I enjoy shooting. I just wish that it was a 4 inch. Great gun and your price is good.

I traded a used Glock 48 plus $100 for a brand new 617 last summer so $700 would have been a reasonable price. I like 22s and like revolvers but had previously vowed to never own another 22 revolver due to the stiff DA trigger pull and way they sometimes bind up due to 22 ammo being dirty.

But the 617 changed my mind by being a great shooter. Its a keeper. I like it a lot better than previous 22 revolvers I had owned or tried, the most recent being a Ruger GP-100 I bought and quickly sold a few years ago. The 617 trigger is heavy in DA but smooth, has the usual great S&W SA pull, the gun balances well and is accurate.

I got a newish 648 a few months ago for $755 from GB with local pickup. had damaged rear site that I will replace. I feel I got a fair deal. It would have been over 800 with shipping and FFL transfer fees. (648 is 22 mag version)

To the OP: hope you can find another example that will add to your growing collection! I really like the configuration of my 617 4".
