637-2 value and date
Stopped by LGS yesterday and they had a really clean 637-2 on consignment. It was the gun only no box or paperwork. It had Hogue stock, a pocket holster and a zipper case. The Hogue made it feel great in my hand; got all three fingers on it.
It was really clean and price was $499. The SN was CTU42nn. I did some checking on GB and prices were up and down from this price. Watched some review videos last night and most were very favorable about accuracy, dependability, and being a great defensive pistol.
Can anyone tell me how old this one is and if you think it's a good value at that price?
I've got several 357s, a LCRx .38 for my wife and a nice Taurus 85 already. I think this would make a nice lightweight carry gun or a good backup carry. Who am I kidding...I don't need any more convincing...I liked it! It would be my first S&W snubbie...here I go again, down another S&W rabbit hole...

It is the currently produced version of the 637; don't know how the price compares to the current market rate for a NIB one, or if any are available.
Photos when you pick it up, please.

Thanks for the info Kevin, I really appreciate it! I could tell it wasn't that old or shot that much for that matter.

Thanks murphydog. I haven't seen any 637s in the past 2 years either at some of my LGS or at gun shows either. Guess they get swooped up quickly just like everything else these days.

firefighterjohn................my local gun shop here in East Tennessee has always tried to
keep an airweight in stock. The 637 that I have now (my avatar pic) came from him. Another customer had put it in layaway and declined going thru with the purchase. My friend--the store owner had just put the 637 back in the showcase as I happened to arrive
at the store. The shop had the 637, a 638, and a 642. I was specifically looking for the
637 to match the one that my wife carries. All three Airweights were sold before the store closed that day . This was about a year ago......after the political panic -hysteria
mess had started. I just checked the price hang tag that was on my 637,and it was $499.00 I traded a Kahr CM9 in on the 637...had to add some cash..seems like 75 or so. I only regret that I did not think to get the 642 and 638 in the deal.

Jared, thanks for your info and price you paid. Sounds like this one is a pretty good deal, everything considered a year later. Ya, looking back it would have been great to get all three since they are so hard to come by now. At least you got the ONE you were looking for.

Thanks all for your great responses. I think I'll go back and at least put it on layaway...before it gets away. The LGS is holding it for me. Sometimes it pays to be a regular customer!

"Any Problems with the Ti cylinder ?"
None so far. I have six titanium cylinders. Each 637-2 has one in .38Sp/.357Mag and another reamed for 9mm. I find that I usually mount the 9mm cylinders and use 147gr jhp to inhibit cylinder face erosion . The grips are relatively heavy and drive the weight up to 12.5oz. Muzzle velocity averages a little over 950 fps for roughly 290 ft-lbs energy, so the recoil is noticable but only mildly painful with these grips.

Here's another of my 637-2 revolvers with 9mm titanium cylinder and rubber Hogue laser sight grip. I don't much like that grip even though I have modded it to make it easier to turn the laser on.

I just pick one up this morning at my LGS priced at $469.99 paid part in trade and cash. I couldn't be happier with it.

Nice snag, but a heads-up, if you please. The OEM boot grip knockoffs will not allow the HKS speedloaders to freely drop the rounds into the chambers. The grips will have to be slightly relieved in that area to permit HKS reloading. The original Uncle Mike's did not require any such trimming.

I have two Bianchi Speed Strips that should be here tomorrow, the HKS speed loader pretty much in the photo for show, and keeps the rounds from being loose in my pocket.

My 637-2 is currently at S&W getting a problem fixed. It's date of birth was in 2011, so it's about 10 years old. I really like the old Uncle Mike's grips on it for shooting. Congratulations on picking one up!

Hi Bill! May I ask, please, what is the problem with your 637? Wondering if I should check mine!

Hi Kaaskop,
It took me quite awhile to figure out. I thought I was getting light strikes on the primers at first. After much trying different things, such as, changing the springs, firing pin, cleaning out the firing pin channel, and cleaning everything over and over again, what was happening was the cylinder wasn't always rotating.
It was an intermittent problem, so it was difficult to find. I finally had a friend watch me shoot the 637 and my friend caught it. S&W wouldn't send me a new hand or cylinder stop, so back to Mother ship she went. I wasn't sure which part was causing the issue, so I asked for both. Hope this helps!

attn Bill In Texas
Hi Bill! It's a little late this time to check, but I've had a similar difficulty with more than one (!) of my J-frames. The sideplate screws worked loose under firing. The cylinder rotated when the trigger was pulled, but the hammer was not budging. Don't know if this is a "bumble bee" situation that "cannot happen," but I've seen it more than once (perhaps some parts get out of alignment?). I encourage owners of modern J-frames to check the tightness of sideplate screws and see that they are firm, not over-tight.

This is very true. I just got a new to me 642. I've been dry firing it alot. About 3 weeks ago I noticed one of the side plate screws missing. Still waiting on the replacement to come in from S&W.
As far the 637 goes, I am not sure, but I don't think this was the case. I would work on it and take it to the range. Each time the gun malfunctioned, and I opened it up, the side plate screws were tight. Thanks Kaaskop, I'll be keeping an eye out on them in the future.
