629-5

The 629-5 is probably my favorite series. Own five of various barrel lengths including a Lew Horton limited run and Comp Hunter. The PCs still had non-MIM internals. I haven't had an issue with any and actually prefer the frame mounted firing pin vs. hammer mounted. They had the endurance package by then as well.

Good gun but many purists consider these the beginning of the downfall. Even though they are prelock S&W had transitioned into using MIM parts by then. Still good but everyone looked at this as a cost cutting measure and not as durable

I was under the impression that the 629-5 was fitted with MIM parts.
This one is NIB but has case hardened hammers and trigger. Don't
MIM Smiths have MIM (non case hardened) triggers and hammers?

All dash 5s should have MIM triggers and hammers. Yours may have been a transitional gun and the factory was trying to use up all the parts. Do you have pics?

The MIM triggers and hammers are case hardened, although they're usually not as colorful as the older ones.

I'm not a hater, I like both MIM and older ones. The older ones appeal to me more aesthetically, but MIM works just fine in my experience.

629-5 Camfour distributors 2 1/2" fixed sight...

These 629-5's 2 1/2" "fixed sighters" are totally awesome...I like to "feed" mine 44 specials although an occasional 44 magnum is really neat to experience...very cool to fire just about dusk to see the flames...good luck in finding one...only 300 made...a pretty rare piece...

My cousin has one and I tried to buy it or trade for it for about five years. I was able to find a 629-6 Camfour to satisfy my wants and then one appeared here on the forum for sale, which I was lucky enough to add to my accumulation. You are right, with .44 specials its a great shooting gun.

Here's a gratuitous picture of both of them. I put Ahrends Retro Banana grips on them because I don't like the rubber ones.

Bought my 629-5 Classic new in 2000 . At the time it was my most expensive Smith revolver. Did not even know it had MIM internals until some time much later. I knew the frame mounted firing pin was a departure from the older guns.

With the way it shoots I could care less about the MIM, it is one of the most accurate shooting centerfire repeating handguns I have ever fired.

Congrats on yours! Fine looking 44!
