I just noticed today that I have installed a set of Pachmayr "Gripper" grips that are designated for S&W J-frame square butt guns (Pachmayr model # 03250), on my round butt model S&W 60-14.
This is a set of grips that I had lying around, so I just put it on without looking at it, since it appeared to fit. It seems to fit fine: no apparent slop, wiggle, or play. I haven't fired it yet, but I anticipate no problems.
I'm not crazy about spending another $35 for the round butt version of these grips (Pachmayr model # 03249) unless I really have to.
Is there anything I need to be concerned about here?
Thanks

Sure -- that it will shoot itself loose. Try it and see, give us a report...

Thanks. So you are saying that even though it seems nice and snug now, once I start shooting it, it will start rocking back and forth, or something like that?

I use square grippers on round butt J and K frames on several carry and competition guns. They just fit me better, and installed correctly, don't slip.
Aside from "Grip Nazis", most don't even notice. If you hold the revolver "high" as you should, you can't feel the gap when you shoot. One "Grip Nazi" doing tech inspection at a local competition got nearly hysterical about it, and I had to get the local Match Director to remind him that grips on revolvers don't even have to "fit the box." Use what you like best.

Live dangerously.
If it goes wrong, advise for the rest of us to learn from, but sounds like a darned good plan.

Yup, I think the plan now is to buy a set of round-butt grips, bring them to the range with me, and then if necessary, do the swap on the spot. This will avoid two possible range trips, additional drive time, etc.
I will leave the round-butts in their original package and simply return them if I don't need them.
This may take a few weeks, but I will advise back with my results when I do so.
Thanks again to all.

Try it, it may work out for you.

I have never had success using rubber grips. They just did not work for my duty pieces and on my competition revolvers, there was enough give that I had two distinct but overlapping groups. Enough dispersion to lose points. I stuck to hard grips after that.

Good luck, let us know what you find out.

All - Getting back to everyone as promised on this thread.
I received my round butt Gripper grips yesterday, and have compared them to the square butts. Bottom line is that I am going to use the round butts.
Although both grips seem to fit the gun fine (no slop or wiggle), I did notice that the round butts fully envelop the frame, including the frontstrap and backstrap. The square butts match up fine with the frontstrap, but there is a noticeable gap between the backstrap and the rear cutout on the square butt grips.
Would this make a difference at the range? I don't know, as I did not compare using live fire. I just figured that since this gun is going to be used for self-defense, not target shooting, I should use the proper grip, to avoid any surprises. And by the time I expend ammo doing a shoot-and-compare, it would just add to my overall expense.
Yes, the round butts were not cheap, but on this gun and for its intended use, I believe it's better to use the "correct" grip configuration.
So I'm keeping the round butts, and have put the square butts up for sale (on this forum).
Thanks again for everyone's input.

I have used closed back square butt grips on a round butt and they are fine.

With the closed back the shape of the butt is completely hidden, I use them to cover a home made square to round conversion on an otherwise pristine model 18.
