Just spied a S&W 60-4 .38 spl 3 inch

Hey there I’m posting a question on this thread because I could not find one specific to my question. I recently purchased a used model 10 without the barrel. It had a 2” barrel on it and I cannot find a 2” barrel for it anywhere. I did find a 3” for a decent price. My question is will it work, or will I need to find an ejection rod for the 3” barrel? Thank you for any advice. -G
You should start a new thread....the group generally frowns on "hijackers" and it'll get more attention that way.
That said, yes, you would need an ejector rod for the 3" and up barrel lengths. 2" barrels have become very scarce since J&G started selling those barrel-less frames. One thing to keep in mind, though, is unless you get the "standard," or tapered, 3" barrel, the shoulder of the frame will not match up properly. The frame where it meets the barrel is quite different on one made for the 2" vs. a frame made for the heavy barrel. Anyway, good luck.
Welcome to the forum, by the way. If you choose to make it a regular stop, you'll find that the S&W knowledge here is unsurpassed anywhere on the internet.

Man, I'd love to have a 60-4! I hope you'll be waiting for them to open this morning.
I'd trade my 60-10 for a -4 in a heartbeat or two. Probably the only trade I'd ever make for one of my stash of sorta-hard-to-get models. :D

Really? I’m considering the opposite trade…

Well, was it there?

That is the question we are all waiting to be answered.

If you did get it the price isn't bad. I lucked into one about 4 or so years ago for right at $500 out the door. It was at a pawn shop and no box or docs.

Sweet little shooter but I haven't spent near enough time with her.

I was bidding on the blued counterpart on GB a couple weeks ago and believe that one probably went for a great price. I bailed at $600 or so and the auction was almost over so unless someone came in and jacked up the price someone walked away with a good deal there as well.

Not the greatest pic.

I got mine 10 years ago for $600 with box & papers. A very capable and desirable handgun with the full underlug, target hammer & trigger, excellent sights, forged internals, pre-lock frame, etc. It's a great match for the .38 Special cartridge and IMO one of the best J-frames ever built.

Well today didn't start off so well...

Went to shoot .50 cal CVA Night Stalker. Brought gun, box with balls, maxi-balls, patches, etc., fireproof with Pyrodex and 777 powder (I'm paranoid about the possibility of fire), key to gun range, targets, caps, etc...

Drove there before hot sun. Then.... I FORGOT THE KEY TO THE FIREPROOF BOX!!!

Didn't fire a shot.

Went to see if my DVD I ordered from 1/2 price books in (been over a month.) No, it ain't in.

Went to stores looking for .50 cal balls ... not a one in sight.

So went to the other town where I knew some .50s were (and so was the 60-4.) 60-4 still there.

Talked 'em down to 703, tax included. Put lay-a-way. And got some Hornady .50 balls and conical slugs at another store.

Got home just in time to find the workers were finished with the air conditioner duct work (new central heat/air... $10,000.) But I forgot to get the distilled vinegar and bleach for the drain for that new thing.

Tomorrow...

But yea, I GO IT!!!

Absolutely did not realize what a bargain this was 5 years ago...60-4 with box and papers...$350!

My Model 60-4 as it came from the factory. Shipped on March 24, 1992 and purchased new by me on June 13, 1992.

As noted by forum member nbedford, my 60-4 much prefers 158 grain Cast SWC to Round Noses; probably the only 38 Special revolver I own that shows that preference.

I got my 60-4 when they first hit the market. It has been an extremely satisfactory revolver in every way. I have taken a bushel basket of sitting rabbits, both cottontails and snowshoe rabbits plus the occasional wounded or sitting grouse and squirrels. That double underlugged barrel holds so well that it works well on the range, too! It has turned out to be one of my most favored revolvers of all time.

Congratulations DeafSmith for nailing that great piece down!

So I got the five shooter off lay-a-way..

The New... and the Old...

A S&W 60-15 and my 'Old' S&W 60-4.

I notice the 60-4 has a mini 'target' hammer and trigger. My 60-15 does not have such a nice thing. Oh well, at least the 60-15 has a 'night sight' on the front sight.

Congratulations! My 60-4 was a pawn shop find as well—about 12 years ago if memory serves. The gun counter of the shop I found it in catered to the SASS crowd, which might explain the low price tag on it: $350. I don’t often find significant bargains, but I certainly did that time. It’s a fantastic little gun, and well worth the price you paid.

Great catch..........................

I have it's slightly bigger brother a 60-10 .357 but generally carried with +P.38s. Great "Kit Gun" for Penn's Woods.

Mine wears a set of Spegel Extended Boot Grips..... smooth black Walnut.

Mine came looking the same as yours. It had the box and docs, but no tool bag. Did yours have a cleaning kit and SAT? I’m thinking I should have gotten a cleaning rod with straight, knurled end instead of the loop, brush and mop, and the little flat, double ended blue SAT. Is this correct, or had they discontinued the kits by this time?

BTW, I was dissatisfied with having leftover tire parts for stocks, so I got a set of dark (ebony?) smooth combats. Priceless!
