UPDATE IN POST 34 BELOW

Update #2 at bottom.

Hi folks,

When the 3-inch model 65 thread appeared, I was too late to score any k-frames. There was, however, one lonely L-frame with combats left for sale.

Well, it arrived. It's filthy.

I believe this clump to be peanut butter, there should have been an allergy warning:

One drop of oil after every shift, what could go wrong?

I may have to call this one Tetanus.

The grips are their own thing.

OP,you did a nice job resulting in a beautiful snubby.
A 2 1/2 686-4 with the shipped from factory combats in original box recently hammered on GB for $1639
I have 2 x 2 1/2" 686-4
#1 is a shooter with S&W logo Hogue rubber
#2 is a safe queen in original box with the factory shipped combats

Congratulations, great save and nice gun.

I had a -4. I think they look fantastic, but I didn't shoot it much, so I sold it to a security guard who wanted it as a backup gun.

I was going to purchase one of the centerfire revolvers as I got on their site early. Ultimately I didn't take the plunge as I'm happy with what I currently have. That being said projects like this example are what always drive me to roll the dice. Like the OP and his 686, sometimes it works out and you are left really happy with a quality work of art!

Thanks God for the imaginative folks on this forum who envision the restoration possible with some of these terribly neglected firearms. It is often hard for me to believe the lack of proper care that these beauties get and deserve. Good Job Sir!
