So. just what does one of these cannons go for in price now days? This slick piece I've found as round butt wood S&W grips... I'd love to put those grips on my 629-2 Mountain Gun!

I have that exact gun, & agree that it would probably bring over
$1000, even with a somewhat unpopular barrel length. But who knows in the volatile market with which we have to deal.

When I bought my 629-3 DX, I knew that those round butt grips would have to go. In my view they make no sense at all on such a long-barreled, heavy gun. I got a pair of round to square conversion grips from Nill in Germany. With those I can maintain a firm grip, without the thing wanting to slip downward on me.

Best wishes with your new gun.

Here is an interesting link that references the 629 DX and how the model is desirable and known for its accuracy.

S&W Model 29 Classic DX: It’s all in the "DX" - RevolverGuy.Com

I agree the longer barrel is not as desirable, but there are some deer hunters out there that would be interested.

If it is the model, I am thinking about it should have come with multiple sight inserts, a test target proving less than a 1.5-inch group at 50 yards and Morado combat grips.

They are not rare but are not common. If the seller has all the items mentioned above and the original box, the value increases.

The real experts will know more.

I saw a recent example (gun but no box) sell for $1100. One has been for sale for $1250 with no takers for a few months.

I personally think a 629-3 DX on good shape is well worth 1K or more. I have a 6.5 inch 629-3 DX and they are great shooters. I have also owned and shot an earlier nickel 8 3/8” model 29 that I regret having sold. The 8 3/8” is a bulky package, but I liked the long sight radius and the additional muzzle weight helped in controlling the recoil impulse.

Like I said... I have a Mountain Gun I want the grips on.. We will see tomorrow as this old lady's husband died and she wants to get rid of his guns (except a few protection pieces.) One of them is the S&W DX! Another is a Eddystone 1917 Enfield (full stock, great condition.)

I've got the 66-1 project going and now this comes up!!
