Just curious, have swapped 6 shot K frame cylinders. What would be involved in a L frame with 7 shot cylinder being fitting with a 6 shot cylinder.

(ie hands, rachet pawl)

When I concluded that my 7 shooter was of no real use to me and of no interest to anybody else I hoped would buy or trade for it; I found that the cylinder from my 6 shot 686 dropped right in.

So I sent it off to S&W. They put in a 6 shot cylinder but decided it needed a new hand, too.

I had Pinnacle High Performance fit a 7 shot cylinder and still have the 6 from one of my 681’s.
Mark had all the small parts needed to allow me to have two complete set ups.He used an oversized hand if I recall.

The 6 and 7 shot cylinders do not require changing the hand. The only issue is the same with any other cylinder swap. Is the headspace and barrel cylinder gap within specs?

Reading it back, that is a simplistic answer and assumes that everything is within spec. If you have a worn extractor or hand, then things may go differently. A better answer is: The 6 and 7 shot cylinders SHOULD not require a new hand.
