J frame in 30 super carry

NOPE! I see nothing wrong with the J Frame just as is in 38 special. Why fix a problem that doesn't exist?

My prediction is that the .30 super will soon be dead and buried as I never bought into the reason it was invented - EXCEPT for profit of course.

Let's be real, Ruger is far more likely to put out a LCR and/or SP101 in 30SC than S&W. Charter Arms right behind them with a seven shot Carrydog or some such name.

And to echo the above, 30SC is a neat idea that came out about 15 years too late. We're drowning in great, reliable 9mm and .380 double stack pocket guns in 2022.

.30 Super Carry pressure is 50,000 psi. I think the J-Frame is too small. Maybe a L-Frame 6 shooter.. Fed .38 HST Micro for carry probably the best but hard to reload with that blunt bullet.

I think that Federal .38 HST load has been discontinued.

From what I heard, Federal was not happy with the performance consistency of the load.

While I agree there are many great choices in small 9mm these days, very few are really pocket guns.

Most of them are belt guns albeit small belt guns.

A lightweight J-frame is still a better pocket gun than most of them.

I'm just thinking since S&W is slow to innovate, maybe 30 super carry would give us 6 rounds and maybe an airweight/airlight version with 60 pro sights

I’ve often wondered if .30 Carbine would work in a SP-101 cut for moon clips. The chamber pressure is less than the .327 Fed Mag and the cylinder should be long enough with the proper bullet profile. The .327 cylinder on my SP-101 measures 1.58”. OAL on a .30 Carbine round is 1.62”, but with a conical bullet profile. I think you could shorten it enough with a truncated cone bullet and still have room for a moon clip cut. I think an SP-101 chambering moon-clipped .30 Carbine would be pretty sweet. What do the experts say? Doable?

Smith & Wesson tried 30 carbine in an N frame during or around war II, I guess it worked but the consensus was it was too darn loud. Severe muzzle blast, recoil was about the same as .45 ACP and average velocity from a 5 inch bbl 1277 fps. ( @ Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson )

Not in the least. A round that makes “similar” energy numbers at more psi then +p? Too many unknowns about the SC round. Until it’s proven, and accepted-known to be staying around instead of just a gleam in some gun writers eyes.

Ymmv, and if you like it, you do you boo!

Can’t be any worse than .327 Fed Mag out of the j-frame sized SP-101. It’s quite a barker, but a lot of fun to shoot:D

I'm thinking if S&W would make the 30 super carry in a J frame it would use moon clips & hopefully have 6 rounds and similar ballistics to 9mm. Would anyone else be interested?

Not practical.
For a variety of reasons.
But people have and do a lot of things that fall into that category.
