Saw a Model 36 wearing these grips on a big auction site and liked the look. Found a set today at Beltway Gun and Pawn in Charlotte. What’s the proper name? Checkered J Frame Target grip? Gives the Model 36 a Detective Special look, feels great in hand, conceals just fine in appendix carry holster.

Nice find. I'll try to find some pics of them on a J-Frame, ;)

There does not seem to be as much information on these compared to early K-frame Target grips. Early ones are mostly plain walnut, after 1980, Goncalo Alves etc. I don't know if they have a special name, but here is a description from a 1970 S&W catalog...

Those things I always thought were “difficult, at best.” :o They have a “Luger-ish” feel to them that I could never get used to. Completely different than a target grip for a K- or N-frame. I eventually took them off of my Kit Guns and went back to the manga-style stocks. I still have a set on a 3-inch HB Model 36, which I keep around to remind me… :D

They are attractive in the photos of your 2-inch gun, and I see the similarity you mention to the DS of the 70s-80s that had a similar semi-target grip. That was one instance when I think S&W might have been wise to copy something Colt did. :D

One of my friends, in another “life,” was a local policeman, and eventually became Chief. He was a very fine DA revolver shot and his carry gun for years was a 2-inch, square-butt, nickeled Model 37 - with stocks like yours. I always thought it an odd combination for such an accomplished revolver shot. :D

I have them on my model 63. Very comfortable in this frame but I don’t like K or N frame targets for shooting.

that's curious, most find the targets the most comfortable. my old girlfriend used to prefer to shoot a friends 4" model 29 with stout 44 ammo over my 1911 or Model 28 with magna grips.

Those stocks fit both RB and SB J frames. I personally like how they feel in my hand. Four or five years ago nice used stocks like that sold for $30.00 to $35.00 per set. Not anymore, unfortunately.

I also like these stocks. Have a nice pair on my Blued M37 with 3" Barrel. I've seen them referred to as J Frame Conversion Stocks. Prices have gotten high for a good condition book-matched pretty wood set these days.

I have owned guns with the J SB Targets in the past but, for me the J RB (banana) target make the little 36, etc. point much more naturally.

I like the Bananas too. In fact, your comment and the one below it inspired me to break this out of the safe. Carrying it today. A somewhat ragged Model 38 with Bananas. I wish that the Bananas were a little grippier but they still feel good.
