36-9 Lady Smith questions picture added
A good friend of mine sent the following email. I was hoping that someone could jump in and share their knowledge and/or opinion. Thank you in advance:
A neighbor has a S&W .38 cal 5 shot Lady Smith, Model #36-9, with serial #CEL27xx. It's blued with the name on the right side and what appears to be rosewood grips. Those have been removed, and a set of Pachmayr's installed. Over all, probably a 90+% piece. Was advised only one cylinder has been shot thru it, which well could be the case. Oil marks around the cylinder release and at the edge of where the top of the grips end.
No known box; has been sitting in a Kydex type holster.
No pics as yet. Any thoughts as to age and value?

The SCSW 4th edition says CEL prefix comes from year 2000. I'm not good with values so I'll leave that for someone else.

The Chiefs Special Model 36-9 is built on the J-magnum frame, which S&W launched in 1996.
At that late serial number S&W likely shipped it in late 2000 or early 2001. It has MIM trigger, beveled thumbpiece and flat-faced hammer that strikes a frame-mounted firing pin.
It would have come in what S&W called a jewel case, like the Model 60-9 Lady Smith in the photo. Some of the Lady Smiths of that era had the shorter, boot style stocks instead of the combats seen in the photo.
Impossible to judge value without photos since you say it's only 90+ percent.

appreciate the input. will try to get photos from my buddy that might help generate additional opinions. I think he is interested in buying and just looking to make a fair offer.

The seller does not have the original box. There is a blemish of some sort on the right side. Any estimation of value would help my friend make a fair offer. Appreciate your time.

The stocks are smooth laminated rosewood boots.
The blemish on the side plate is a big detractor for me. Solely due to it I'd say $400 at the most. The last one I list as having sold was the same configuration, and it had the jewel case, the original cardboard box and the paperwork. It went for $595 about a year ago.

I just bought a 36-9 with light holster wear that I paid $530 for. Last 36 before the horror of the hole.
