I'm considering purchase of a 66-5 with quad mag-na-ported barrel. I tried a Bing search and a Forum search but my search-fu seems weak. How can I find out if Smith catalogued the above gun or the porting was done aftermarket?
Thanks,
Ed

I don't think S&W ever offered "Magna Porting" from the factory. A few guns made in the Custom Shop have had a S&W designed porting, but they weren't catalog items. There were a a few guns cataloged that had a "Power Port", entirely different than Magna Port, which is a Patented process the company "Magna-Port".

Well it depends on what you consider "after market". S&W has had limited runs on new factory guns ported from Magnaport and sold as new from S&W. I have 2 performance center revolvers with magnaports. There are several revolvers done with magnaporting from S&W

Is it truly Mag-na-Port? Their trapezoidal shaped ports are propietary

Smith & Wesson shipped many ported forearms. Some, like my Model 60 Small Hunter were ported by Mag-na-Port as a Factory Original Feature

182 of these were produced as a Lew Horton Distributor Exclusive

The Factory also had it's own porting. The ports were oval like on this Performance Center Model 640

I do not recall a quad port Model 65 that was Mag-na-Ported

Call the Factory, do not message them.

Ask for the product code for that serial number. A quick look in the SCSW should them answer your question
