Mag-Na-Porting a 629

Unless something has changed recently you do not have to send a gun to be worked on through a FFL dealer.
When I had Larry MagnaPort my three I stripped them down to only the frame & barrel assembly.
You may want to check but I'm pretty sure you don't need to send through a FFL to be worked on.
S&W, Dan Wesson, and SIG sent me a pickup and returned my guns direct to me numerous times.
Cheers
James

I have no experience shooting an unported .44 magnum so I can’t comment on recoil. I bought my first ever .44 magnum last year, a 29-3 that was already magnaported. I haven’t shot it that much but noticed the dirty front sight. It really had no collector value as it was also hard chromed but I like working guns so it’s perfect for me.

If you’re thinking about it, there’s only one way to find out
I bought this mountain revolver used
It had bad finish issues but it shot my standard every day mid range loads and several full bore magnums loads really well
It was already ported and I tried finding out if it left Springfield that way…

So off to magna port it went
I really like it
A great action, great sights and in my eye, great looks
If I had it to do over again, I’d have the quad ports done
I got every thing I wanted, it took over a year and I’ve got some coin tied up…

Oh well
Like I said
I like it and it’s not going anywhere

There were some mountain guns that were ported if I’m remembering correctly. But I don’t know who did the porting. I also think they had a laser etched motif of some sort on the side. A bear maybe.

Great responses. Very much appreciated.

As it is not a no dash I am not concerned with resale value. I do intend to give it a good amount of range time.

The holster I found will make it a nice carry piece too.

I am not following. If it was already ported why would you send it to Mag-Na-Port?

I’ll bet CW had them do an action job, and jewel the trigger and hammer.

To my eye, the Magnaport vents don’t look as bad as the re-crown, or the jeweling. Different strokes….

I’m going to call Magnaport today and see if I take the cylinder out, if I can indeed circumvent the FFL shipping hassle as a previous poster suggested.

If so, I have an uncollectable 4.25 Anaconda that’s going on a road trip.

My agency did not allow the use of ported firearms for various reasons. If one has to shoot immediately out of the holster with the firearm against their hip/side, the ports can end up causing you injury. It was also not liked for night shooting.

That is a nice looking gun!
The contrast between the matte finish and the high polish screws is quite attractive. The metal prep work looks to have been absolutely top-notch, with crisp lines, clear markings, and a tight sideplte to frame fit.
When Magnaport introduced their Combat Conversion, there was nothing else like it except John Jovino’s work.
Would S&W ever have introduced the Mountain Gun or the Lew Horton 3” 24-3, 624, etc., if Magnaport hadn’t pioneered this type of custom work?

Had them do a few more modifications
It has the finest action of any N frame I’ve handled
The front site does smoke up with mid range cast loads
The ports do help with full power loads, it likes the 240xtp’s over 20 gr of 2400
I enjoy bringing it out for some range time buts its not a high volume shooter for me that’s what the new guns are for

Their were a few others doing the same but I get your point and I totally agree
Thanks for the kind words
