I had the opportunity last moth to travel to some of my old hunting grounds in the Selkirk’s. I only had a couple of days, so I decided just to hit some small lakes and streams for cutthroat and rainbows. A cold front and the first snow came in the night before I got out there and the fish were not particularly interested in anything I was throwing their way, but as always it was great to be out. I didn’t see any people this trip and that is the norm.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in these areas and when you get back in the right areas black bear, cougars, wolves, grizzly, and moose are encountered far more than people. When I want to travel light canoeing, or mountain biking the 396 with heavy Skeeter loads has been my go to for many years. Carries well, handles well, great sights for fast work in low light. With heavy loads it is a handful but not punishing or hard to make follow up shots even when using a flashlight. Great for my purpose.

Neat guns! Mine looks a bit different. Bought it for backup while bow hunting elk here in MT (later replaced with 329).

Night Guards are the schitzen. Regret not buying every one I saw languishing on the shelf back in 2008 or whenever it was. Great gun, pictures and scenery!

Paul, love those AirLights too. Almost picked one up shortly after getting this Night Guard. They are almost comically light weight.

Dfox I hear you on the other Night guards. I wish I had grab a 315, and a 386. Then probably at least two of the N frames.

DG, thanks for the compliment but it was really just what I could capture with my iPhone. With such beautiful landscape it is hard to get a bad image. Phones have gotten quite good. I do want to get some actual camera equipment out again one of these days. If nothing else it is one more excuse to be outside.

Very nice! I lucked into a 325NG several years ago and would love a 396 as I’m a big 44 Special fan. I’ve got a 24-3 Lew Horton and a 624 4 inch. A 396 or a 296 would really round out the set.

71Vette o you conceal carry your night guard? If so what do you use?

It’s on my hip today in honor of the OP. I’ve got a 3” N Frame sourdough pancake Simply Rugged holster that will hold it nicely. The holster extends a couple inches below my belt but conceals under a light jacket well. It is surprisingly comfortable I’m thinking because of the light weight. I can feel that fat cylinder though…..

396NG

Definitely cool revolvers.

My 396NG, like others have reported in their 396's & 696s, had .4280-.4285" throats so I reamed them out to .430" with a Manson Reamer.

I don't shoot lead bullets often, mainly jacketed, some of which are on the fat side, and opening up the throats just made sense in this lightweight Sc L-frame.

Glad to see you're enjoying yours too. :)

In case anyone is curious -- And before I knew better (thin barrel extension), I shot the Keith load (2400/250gr SWC) that chronoed right at 1,100 fps thru the 18 oz mtn lite. No gun that I've shot has snappier recoil and I have both 475 Linebaugh and 500 JRH Freedom Arms. Don't go there - these L Frame .44 special guns aren't made for those loads and a 250gr at 850/900 fps will do a lot of work.

FWIW,

Paul

I have the 396 NG & 696 that are among my favorite revolvers. Carry them frequently in the field.

Tried a Keith load in the 396 once, only once! 200 grain loads in both have accounted for many varmints at my friends ranch and on several hunts.

If I feel the need for heavier bullets, I'll shoot the 44 Spl Keith load in my 329PD. Liked that combo so much, I added a red dot optic (JP Enterprises mount and J Point RDO) to the 396PD. Hardest part has been sourcing a holster to fit a RDO equipped N frame.

Simply Rugged holsters said they had 2 models they could make that will fit well. I'm taking some pics this week to get this project moving forward.

Now if I could just find a chest rig for it!
