Would appreciate info on this 629 Backpacker 3", serial nbr NLT0175. Perhaps date of mfg. Prices vary all over the place for this gun so was needing a way to verify it is the Backpacker.

If you can post a couple pictures it would probably help. There are several 3" 629 back packers in the SCSW book, around page 308. I suppose if you have the box it came in there is a date code. The serial number NLT**** I don't see in the listings. But pictures would help the people here who are way smarter than I am! There is a plain Backpacker, Alaska Backpacker, Mountain Backpacker, etc. Good luck. Someone here will do way better than me.
Edit to add: Each one has its own little description of cylinder, underlug, maybe stampings (Like a bear on the side plate.)

Not much help on your Backpacker, strange serial number. My plain Backpacker is serial BSBxxxx 629-4 shipped in 1994 is a standard barrel 3 inch. Only the box is marked Backpacker, nothing on the gun except the standard markings.

Welcome to the Forum! According to the "SCSW 4th Ed." Pg 309, you have either:

1.) Alaska Backpacker Model 629-4...3" bbl., fluted cylinder, bear scene on the sideplate, matte stainless, Hogue stocks. 500 were made in March 1998 with "NLT" s/n prefix for Alaska distributor V.F. Grace. Product Code 148083.

2.) Alaska Backpacker II Model 629-5...3" full lug barrel, fluted cylinder, bear scene on the sideplate. 300 were made in 2000 with "NLT" s/n prefix for Alaska distributor V.F. Grace. Produce Code 103698.

That's the best I can do since you didn't include any pictures or Model number. But I would say that you definitely are looking at a fairly rare Alaska Backpacker (only 500 or 300 manufactured) since it has the "NLT" s/n prefix.

Thank you

A big thank you to all that helped with the Backpacker inquiry. Your input helped me decide to keep the gun in my husbands collection and pass it along to family. Regards, Anna

I have a SW 629-1 3" barrel. It has the firing pin on the hammer. Can anyone here tell me it this era is safe to carry with 6 rounds in the cylinder or should I only load 5? SN BBE8272 Thank you for any assistance. Also, if you know the value of this gun. Its brand new never been fired in the original box.

Welcome to the S&W Forums. The design of these revolvers is one in which the hammer and firing pin retract slightly when the trigger is released. Once the trigger is released and the hammer retracts, the hammer is blocked from forward movement, so it is perfectly safe to carry with all chambers loaded.
