Information on 586-3 3 inch
Hello - I am hoping the members here can help me gather some information on a revolver I found at my LGS. Condition is good with a nick here and there. All the research I've done makes me believe this may have been a limited production run. It's a 586-3, with a 3" barrel. What do you think the value of this may be?
Thank you for your help.
Here are some pictures

I am not the expert you are looking for but what a beautiful revolver.
I do believe they are rare but someone will come along and offer up some solid information soon.
Very nice.

They made some 3-inch 586s, but unlike the 3-inch 686, which became a regular production item, the 3-inch 586 did not become a standard production item. The "Standard Catalog" will give more details.

Not much that I could find in the "SCSW". Product code 103567 Blue 3" TT. Three inch 568s are hard to find.
8288 is October 14, 1988 (I think a Leap Year)
It looks like some sort of limited edition, but info info that I saw. Maybe there is something somewhere else in the book that I didn't find.

If you're a "snubby guy" you need to dash back and buy that unless the shop is completely "out where the busses don't run" on the pricing.

He's trying to figure a price fair for the seller. The shop is local and took the pistol in on consignment. I'm hoping to nail that down this week. It's a forced sale so we are unable to get information from the prior owner.
Thank you each for your responses so far.

The scarce 3" 586-4s tend to sell in the $2000-2500 range, when you can find one.
This one was probably a "distributor special". If you are able to get it a letter of authenticity would be a very good idea:

Welcome back to the Forum! You're looking at an interesting revolver, and probably somewhat rare. The Model 586-3 was introduced in 1988, but the triple-alpha s/n for this one (BHP) indicates it was manufactured in 1992. It's interesting that the Spec. Order 8288 indicates 1988 but the s/n indicates 1992. The SCSW 4th Ed. only states that the Product Code (103567) means 3" bbl., blued, TT, and unfluted cylinder, and the box states "Non-Standard" features. I couldn't find anything related to Lew Horton or another distributor's special order. There is no mention of the number of revolvers manufactured in this PC, but I suspect that it's not too many since 586-4 was released in 1993. In today's slightly softer vintage revolver market, I think that this 586-3 with original box, and without its original stocks, would be worth around $1200-$1500...maybe more to the right collector. Hopefully some of our Forum gurus can shed some light on this nice revolver. As others have said, you may need a letter to really know this revolver's pedigree. If you really like this revolver, I hope that the lgs prices it so that you can take it home. Good luck!

That is a great looking gun, and almost impossible to find. I would love to run across a 3 or 2.5 inch 586 snubby.
Here’s a 586-5 2 1/2 sold 4 years ago.

I was wondering when someone was going to bring up the grips. Those look like Pachs to me, which, while functional, definitely hurts the value.
I'd say the price would be 1100$ tops, even with the box. If they have the original stocks somewhere not shown in the photos 1300+.

Rare One for Sure
If the price is right, take it. Never heard of a 3 inch 586-3. Rare Gem! Congratulations if you can get it. Good Luck.

The unflutted cylinder would seem to make it even more rare. Is the white box indicative of a performance center gun? Admittedly it’s out of my wheelhouse.

In looking at the box, I seem to recall this was a style used for export guns of the period.
Any update on an asking price?

Find one for me at that price and you get a $200 finders fee.

I’ve never seen one in person, but the couple I’ve seen online were $2500+, and that was as a few years ago. $1300 is a steal! My only 3” L frames are a pair of 696 no dashes and a 396.

Beautiful gun. I have not seen one with the unfluted cylinder. I have only seen Hogue grips on the 3" model 586 guns. The grips should look like these on my 586-4.

S&W 586-4 3”
Found this one a few months ago on one of the big online sites. Couldn’t believe what I was looking at and grabbed it right away. $1,750 delivered. Which I thought was pretty good. Custom Grips are from Curt Harlow and added later.

No, it indicated it was an export gun. That box was used for special low production customs runs that were exported.

No this particular gun is a dash 3 square butt 586 3 inch. It originally shipped with some high figured grain factory square butt combats. I had one of these boxed some time ago.

OP you stumbled upon a very rare revolver. I owned one of these several years back and only seen 3 back then with mine being the only boxed one I have seen. This is 4 I have seen now and only the second boxed one. This one was a very limited and special run that was an export run hence the export box. The non standard feature indicated the 3 inch square butt with unfluted cylinder since the two runs of the 586-4 round butt 3 inchers were fluted cylinders. Safe to say under 100 made for sure if not even less than 50. The original factory grips that shipped on this gun were square butt Morado wood Combat grips. This gun is worth 3500-4000 to the right collector. Upper end of that may be hard since the Original factory grips that shipped with it are not present. Also this gun was shipped somewhere between 1993-1998 fyi. Definitely get it lettered. I wish I still owned mine I had years ago and wish I also would have had it lettered to figure out the mystery..

for these rare and less commonly transacted guns, if I were the shop owner, I would think the fair thing to do for the seller is to just put it on GB with a 10-15% commission fee
so seller gets paid the "market" price, hard to know what the "fair" price is otherwise imo
