Are you still rocking a scoped revolver?

Remember the 80s and 90s when handgun hunting was gaining traction? Guys like Bill Wilson and JD Jones were whacking big critters with revolvers and TC Contenders.

A friend called me a couple of months ago knowing I’m always in the mood for a bargain, plus I have an affinity for Leupold products. I said “What cha got?” Leupold 2 power pistol scope was the reply. A hundred fifty dollars later, and I was the owner of said scope.

I had the base and rings laying around, so I thought “Why not put it on that 617?” For some odd reason, I think it looks kind of cool. I always knew this was a good shooting 22 revolver. (It better be, it’s gone back 3 times!) I shoot 5 shot groups. At 100 yards I’ve gotten groups as small as 3.5 inches. My best at 25 yards is just under a half inch. No way can I do that with irons. I doubt if I could do that with a red dot, but the dot would have been close behind.

This little scope has shown me the true potential of the 617. I think I’ll leave it on.

I bought a 610 No Dash that someone had drilled and tapped for rings. Came with the rings also. I had this stainless 4x Weaver that I bought from another forum member and they went together very nicely. Since the revolver was no longer original, I went ahead and reamed it for 10mm Magnum. I’ve only had it out once, but I was very happy with its performance.

I've got a few scoped revolvers,

14" 460 with a Burris 1.5X4

8-3/8" 657 with a Burris 2X

8-3/8" PC 629 with a Burris 2X7

12" PC 647 with a Bushnell that I don't remember the magnification!

There may be others that I have forgotten, not to mention a bunch with red dots.

Years ago I put
an inexpensive Simmons scope on my 6" 617. Usually shot off a bag at 50 yards. It was too big and heavy to shoot offhand. Once it was dialed in it was truly a tackdriver. Eventually I began to miss casual plinking with a favorite .22 revolver, so that pistol scope now sits on an older Ruger Charger mounted with a bipod and gets used off a bench.

Mine is a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk .45 Colt with a honkin' big old Tasco ProPoint red dot sight. Nowadays I suppose I could replace the ProPoint with something a lot smaller and lighter -- but, the combo has always worked perfectly as-is.

No
I still have the scopes, and reluctant to sell them, but I doubt I’ll use em again. RDS work better for me.

I keep a few scopes on my revolvers. This Leupold on the Magnum Hunter is good for about two rounds before it gets laid on a rest.

The Leupold M8 on this Magnum Hunter is more manageable for multiple rounds before it starts feeling heavy.

This 624 had been drilled & tapped when I bought it so it wears a Burris 2X and is good for a range outing standing.

I have several

But only a few are photographed

Funny thing is both of the revolvers pictured above along with the 2 T/C Contenders in that 41 Magnum group photo are all chambered in 41 Magnum

The Model 741 DW above has a 1x red dot

I have an additional 6" nickel 57 also with a scope on, it but I do not have a picture of it

There is also a 4" nickel Model 15 that is scoped

One of my Ruger MK-IIs has a 4x Leupold

I am pretty sure that all of the remaining scoped handguns that I own are single shot Contenders or Encores. Some have 2-7x Burris scopes

This 500 Magnum has a Burris 3-9x on it

Revolvers, no I feel I suffer in target acquisition over what I gain in accuracy. Contender handgun bbls, yes on 6 out of 8.

I remember. I saw a lot of nice N Frame revolvers trashed by duplex and triplex reloads.

I got the TC Contenders for wildcat loads and for hunting. Good times (1980s) indeed.
