I just picked up this Pre-lock 586-7 L-Comp with a 4" barrel. I can't find any info in the Standard Catalog about it. Does anyone know how many of these were made? It's not the French GIGN variation. The Performance Center gave me the manufacture date (2002) and called it a "transition" gun (right before the lock), but that's all they knew. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Todd

Todd,
That is one of the GIGN models, it's just that only a very few had the crest markings. If your serial number starts with BCHxxxx, then it's part of the run that they made in conjunction with the GIGN run. When I purchased my first one of these (in April 2002), my dealer got it through RSR and the story at the time was that 150 were made, of which 75 were shipped to France, while the others were released into US distribution. IIRC correctly, there were only a small handful that actually had the GIGN crest that were released into the US. It's not an L Comp, that's for sure.

BTW - both of the ones I have came with rubber grips, the Combats on yours was probably added later (unless I was shortchanged...

Nice catch! I'd love to come across one of those to compliment my pre lock L-comp. Regards 18DAI

If they would only put out guns like these without the infernal lock, they would sell all they make.

I had my 586-7PC (BCH00xx) lettered back in 2006 and according to Roy Jinks this handgun was one of 80 units sold to RSR Group Florida Inc. The factory records indicate that this gun had "checkered rubber finger groove grips" when it was shipped from S&W on 4-2-02.
