Can you change a barrel on a 617? I have a 6" and really would like a 4". If possible price might be a major factor I would think. Any thoughts on costs?

It might be easier and cheaper to sell it and buy a 4". You might have to add a bit of cash because the 4" is more in demand. Another option would be to send it to SDM and have them cut the barrel and add thier front sight system that will allow you to use differnt sight blades like the 629 Classic. I have been thinking of doing this for my 6" 617. I was thinking of a 5" though. The last time I looked the cost was around $150.

I paid a local smith $60 labor and fitting to swap a barrel on a M65, plus the cost of the barrel.

Thinking outside the box here but is it the barrel length or balance that is really the problem? My 6" 17's balance /feel much like my 4" 617. ( MY 6" 617 is a bit too nose heavy for my liking.) Having the lugged milled down/shorter may get you where you want to be and at less cost. As a side benefit, we'll all be green with envy.

I felt my 6 shot 6" 617-5 was too muzzle heavy. I had it cut to 5". It now matches the weight (46 oz.) and balance of my 627PC. Makes a great training gun. I also have 10 shot 4" and 6" 617-6s. They are nice, too.

Yes the barrel weight is just too heavy on the front end for me. My 686 is perfect so that's why I was thinking 4" would be good. Looking at the prices for changing or modifing mine just look expensive. Probably would be better off just trying to sell it and but the 4". Thanks for everyone's input. Great gun though. Faster reloading 10 in the cylinder than loading a 10 round mag too.

My local gunsmith quoted me about $375 to put a 4" barrel on my 686-6". I'm taking it to the gun show tomorrow & see if I can find a 686-4" to horsetrade with.

Going to look for a 617-4", also.
