Default S&W 1911 Grip Safety

A gunsmith has told a friend of mine that the grip safety on Smith 1911s is proprietary, and that no other brand can be fit to it. I've never heard of that, and the whole story, with which I'll not bore you, is suspicious. Oh, and to be clear, this is one of the guns with a beavertail, not a standard 1911 GS. Any of you guys know about this?
