I'm trying to install a barrel on a 44HE, 2nd model and the barrel goes about 1/2 way in and stops. I think the threads on the barrel need to be cleaned up. Threads in the receiver are OK. I don't have a die to clean up the barrel threads. Any suggestions?

Usually lacking a die & tap to clean up the threads on a bbl and/or receiver where they the fit was a bit too tight,,in the past I've lapped the threads in.

It's a slow process, compared to running and tap into the frame and die over the bbl threads,,but it can produce a nice fit all the same.
I've used nothing but plain 'fine' grade valve grinding compound to accomplish it.

Protect the finish on the parts by wrapping them up with tape or something similar. As hard as you try to avoid it, the abrasive compound will find it's way onto the surfaces just though the constant handling of the parts.
When the bbl winds in with the lapping compound on the threads to about 1/4 turn shy of coming up to square,,stop there and wash all the compound off the threads of the bbl and the frame.
Make sure it's all out of there in the frame. Use a toothbrush and solvent inside there. The bbl threads are easier to see and clean of the stuff.
That extra 1/4 turn on threads cleared of the abrasive compound will give enough draw up for a snug fit.
A dab of grease on the threads before final install lets them run in together smoothly and avoids any seizing.

I got a N frame tap and I made a matching die. PM or email me and you can borrow them for shipping cost. I am waiting for the snow to quit to go out and set up elk camp so will be gone for a while. Jim

PS.The die is made from A2 steel and hardened and is adjustable and works well.

Steelslaver, I very much appreciate the offer, I sent you a Forum PM. And I appreciate the responses to my call for assistance. The lapping solution will go in my files as a backup solution. Thank guys!

I am back in town to meet my brothers and show them where I set up our elk camp. Will try to get them in the mail today. Not sure about our little post office on Sat. Then will probably be gone for the week. Jim
