Here are the "before" pictures. I'll add the "afters" when they return, in about a year...

This is a 28-2 I picked up. Mechanically it is fine but the finish is in sad shape. It also needs a new rear sight and micrometer assembly, and a new rebound spring (it's easy to outrace the trigger, I hate it when people do that):

I'm also going to get a pair of magna grips for this gun. I ordered the standard blue, so hopefully when it returns it will be a companion to my other 28-2:

I have two daughters, maybe they will make nice gifts for some son-in-laws some day (provided they meet my approval).

The other was a close call. It's a 36, and the condition is good, but the back strap is a bit rusty. I figured what the heck. On this one I'm going to go with the high polish blue.

Let the waiting begin.

UPDATE:

They're baaaack! The total for both jobs, with minor repairs, was about $530 or so. I decided to go with the "regular blue" and not the high gloss. I really like the results. I have put the Ahrend's back on the 28-2 but I will replace them with some magna grips to match my other 28-2. Here's the reveal:

First, the 36 (It's hard to tell from the pictures, given my modest photography skills, but the 36 looks much, much better - all the rust pimples are gone and the backstrap is back to it's new condition).

And the 28-2:

These guns both feel as if they are brand new (and they have that "new gun smell"). I could not be more pleased (well, I could have replaced the latch on the 28-2, but oh well).

Overall the process took three months, much less time than I expected.

I'm sure they'll be beautiful when you get them back. I can see where it might have been a close call on the no-dash 36. I know I'd have had to think about that one, especially if it's a regular shooter or daily carry.

But hey...it's only money, right? I had a friend sent one of his Smiths off for a reblue, and it actually only took about half as long to get it back as the factory said it would. Maybe you'll be as lucky.

Got the grips. They feel much better than the Ahrend's. Take a look:

I agree with others, I need a new latch. The grips are okay, not as good as originals, but they will do. I'm one of the rare birds for which the magnas on the K, L and N frames feel perfect for me.

The only place to send a nice S&W for a re-blue is the factory!!!!

Well done.
