Are side plates fitted to each revolver or are they interchangeable
with any gun of the same frame size.

Restricting comments to S&W sideplates, there are some who can fit them correctly, but without a lot of experience, most people won't be able to do a respectable job. Or you could get lucky.

It is possible, but unlikely, that another side plate will fit perfectly in a pre-1980 revolver. Newer models are more likely to be interchangeable. The primary issue will be the mismatch in the finish.

Plus you have the 4 screw side plates and the 3 screw side plates. What frame are you looking to replace the side plate on and why. I have an N frame side plate laying in my parts pile.

This is as I suspected. I have a model 10-6 that has some pitting and considered replacing it. I found a side plate available on "the- bay" for a K-frame. When inquiring about the plate, he informed me of his qualifications as an armorer and gunsmith and assured me that he had never seen one that wouldn't interchange. I was doubtful, but made the purchase and of course the side plate would not fit. The seller agreed to accept the return but implied that I must not know what I am doing.

I recently bought one *on spec* for a Victory model because it was in excellent condition and inexpensive.
If it doesn't fit my project gun properly, I will use it as a *sideplate & frame screw holder* on my bench for when any Smith's get disassembled. :)
I may mount it on an oak board or some such.
