Ive been considering having a target .38/357 built on a Model 19 frame I bought that needs a barrel. Saw the Clark Custom Barrels and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with them. They are advertised as Douglas blanks and machined by Clarks. Mainly curious if the accuracy would be any better than a standard Smith barrel. If I rember correctly they are available in the 1:18 twist and also 1:14 but might have that info wrong. The cost of barrel in carbon is around $125 and stainless $50 extra. If course there would be a fitting charge along with adding a front sight. Might not be worth the money. Any opinions?

The Clark barrel is a good way to go. You want the 1 in 14 twist. The accuracy out to 50 yards with slow speed target ammo will be better than a Smith factory barrel due to the tighter twist rate. Yes, it's worth the money if you want a tack driver target gun. I have built several guns over the years with Douglas barrel blanks. I used the 1 in 10, but the 1 in 14 works fine too.

The hotter loads are more accurate at the same distance than target loads from a factory barrel - 1 in 18-3/4 twist - but even better with a tighter twist. My 6" Bianchi gun with a 6" 1 in 10 Douglas would shoot 2" groups at 100 yd. with 170 gr. Sierra JHP at around 1250 fps. That was with a crosshair scope off sandbags. I had one group of 1.9", most were a little over 2".

I have never been able to get a decent group out of plated bullets. Good quality cast, polymer coated and jacketed have all shot good groups. In general, the heaviest JHP for a given caliber will give the best groups at extended range.
