Is there a difference between Pachmayr S&W grips due to lock and pre lock grip frame difference? The reason I'm asking is I bought a k frame Pachmayr for a 1990 model 64 that the main spring is dead center of the screw hole making it unusable. It does work on a newer model 10 with a lock. Both guns are round butt.

It just might be the grips you ordered. You might have mistakenly ordered the wrong grips because I have used Pachmayr grips on my old M10 and the same grips on a newer M686.

Pachmayr did reposition the screw forward on their Presentation grip, I think when they went to the new “improved” one-piece design. I had heard about that and thought it odd because I had not experienced any interference with the screw, and S&W used a centrally located screw, but for whatever reason they did it. They also reshaped the Presentation grip and pretty much ruined it, IMO. I am not one to complain about new stuff just because it’s new, but the new ones are an absolute travesty!

The grip is a Pachmayr SK-C2 Compact. It fits perfectly to the grip frame including the frame posts on lower part. It's a one piece that opens like a clam shell. The grip screw is the type that's narrow in the middle to give enough room for the spring. Holding it up to the light with grip on gun you see the spring through the screw hole. No such problem on the Model 10 though. No big deal but thought I'd ask for next time.Edit: I saw another eBay ad for the same grip listed it for use with model 10, 19, 66 & others but didn't list model 64.

Is the strain screw tight? If loosened it will affect the arch of the mainspring and can cause this problem. Just something to check that often is not thought of.

Loose strain screw was the reason and you fixed two problems for me at the same time. It's a new to me gun and I should've checked the strain screw before. I believe it's supposed to be screwed in all the way snug, correct? The Compacts don't look great be feel really good and the right size for the gun IMO. Thanks for taking the time to find my problem(s).
